Blech!  It looks like some aliens built a spaceship out of corn silos and then crashed it into campus.

Apparently they wanted something "that would stand out from the traditional brick Gothic campus".  North campus, where the museum will be built, is completely populated with beautiful brick buildings with gorgeous architecture.  http://quetwo.deviantart.com/art/IM-Circle-321038
I can understand wanting something a little different for an art museum, but I can't imagine that monstrosity fitting in anywhere.

It's going to be horrible!! Where is the barf emoticon?

And it's obvious from the first picture that this will fit SO well with the buildings around it. ::shaking head::

I've seen far worse crimes against esthetics committed by architects who think they're abstractionist sculptors.

That, however, is about the nicest thing I can say about this.

None of the submissions fit in with the surrounding buildings, but there were much better options.  At least some of the others resembled buildings.

No offense meant but what the hell?!?!?! Shocked Shocked

Makes me wonder how many pilots will end up getting blinded by the flash of the sun off that thing as they fly. All I wanna know is what were they thinking? Or were they? Huh Huh

Oh, that's nuthin'.  Meet the Experience Music Project.  I heard a critic remark that it looks like a pile of discarded fast food wrappers.  Wink

I actually rather like it. Then again, I also like this:

http://www.rom.on.ca/crystal/index.php

And this:

http://picasaweb.google.com/valerix/DowntownToronto/photo#4992982838641164306

I suppose I like juxtaposition in architecture, especially when they build new around the old, rather than tearing it down.

Actually, I find this less offensive and far more interesting to look at.

I actually like a whole lot of the modern architecture movement. But I don't care for that. At all.

I really like Gehry's stuff. Some of it is just absolutely phenomenal.

Oh I like both of those.

Toronto's a great city for interesting architecture. (Even if it means a lot of it shows up as background shots in really bad sci-fi movies.)

New City Hall
http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/torontocityhall/

is right nest to Old City Hall
http://www.fineart.utoronto.ca/canarch/ontario/toronto/toronto.jpgs/tor-50.jpg

but then there is always:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:WikiOntarioPlace_Toronto_ID.jpg

(where they sometimes play said movies and in IMAX yet.)

I don't mind those so much.  And I think it's okay to mix new and old, but they should flow fluidly together in the landscape.  This is going to be, "Oh, neat old building, and other brick building, and another brick building, and then, OMG WHAT IS THAT!!!"
