Even 20 years later this still hurts. (I knew Dick Scobee slightly from his time in San Antonio.)

I was in fourth grade and my teacher had turned on his radio to listen to the lift off, etc.  Imagine the stunned silence of not just the teacher but all us students as well when the announcer said that the Challenger had exploded seconds after lift off, killing all aboard.

May they all rest in peace.

I was in fourth grade

I was working in a lawn chair cushion factory and all of us (the owner and five employees) had gone to a local pub to watch the 'live' broadcast.  The t.v. was still showing the ascent when the boss got a call from his sister (I think it was) to tell him about the explosion.  It was another fifteen minutes before they announced and showed it on t.v., and I don't think any of us believed her until then.

I was in second semester calculus as a freshman in college when the ta came in and announced it.  A friend of my roommates who lived in a dorm without cable came over to watch the explosion repeatedly on CNN for pretty much the rest of the day.

We in the creative dept at TSR had gathered around Kim Mohan's office (the then-editor of Dragon Magazine) to watch the launch on the tv he'd hooked up especially for the event.

I don't think I ever heard that place that silent for that long *ever* again, after we saw the explosion live. It was hours before anyone really said anything audible.

I was working as a special projects programmer reporting directly to the data processing division director at the time. I was set up in the seldom-used conference room in his office suite right across the hall from his office. I came out of my programming hole to use the restroom and saw Jim at his desk white as a sheet. I thought he was having a heart attack  (he had had several), but he told me the shuttle had just exploded. We watched it explode several times in replays on his TV without saying a word. But word spread and show the entire DP staff from two floors of a large building were crammed in his office. The rest of the day was very quiet.

Sigh. Damn, SF, why do you have to remind me of all the shitty stuff that happens around my birthday? Even the really good stuff often ends up with some kind of doom on it. It really is quite freaky.

It was the day before my 23rd birthday, I was about to enter one of the darkest years of my life, I was totally fucked up quite frequently and then this happened too. I honestly don't remember anything at all about that time, except that I was hungover that morning, and everything really hurt all the time anyway. It was just one more thing.
