Worse, they were probably planning to get rid of most of the parts of Yahoo people like and use (Yahoo Groups, for example) as those things compete with their generally lame versions. As far as I can tell, all MS really wanted was the search engine and the advertising stuff.

I didn't know MS even had groups.
