Space Shuttle Columbia - 1 February 2003

I woke up to this one. The minute I heard that communication had been lost, I feared the worst. Sadly, I was right.

Space Shuttle Columbia - 1 February 2003

I was in a barn storage room, doing what I can't recall.  The farm owner/slave master appeared in the door and said "The Space Shuttle - it was coming in..."  He swept his hand before him.  "Gone."

All I could do was think of the brewing war and the Israeli on board the Shuttle.  Maybe it was sabotage.

Now, it is only sorrowful.

I woke up to it too, though by then they knew it was that bad.  Instead of having all day to do other day-of-ritual prep for Brigidfeast, I had to use a big chunk of that time to adapt the ritual to accommodate it (while crying at intervals) - I know my people; no way could I leave it unaddressed, even if I was inclined to do so myself, which I most certainly was not (as folks no doubt figured, from my practice of posting the Memoriums every year).

Because of that, Columbia's loss is the incident that's most personal for me - generationally speaking, Challenger ought to be, and I don't feel Challenger any less for it, but Columbia involved me more, on more levels.

All of the losses I memorialize fill me with a combination of pride and sorrow.  These people all gave their lives in a cause that they believed, and I believe, is profoundly important for all of humanity - one of the most honorable ways to die, but their dedication makes it all the greater of a loss.

And I agree, again profoundly. Dedication, service, sacrifice.  And then I look at the invasion of Normandy.

<shakes head>

These things I would have given, willingly.  But I am too old now, too broken, no longer of service.

All I can do now is revere these young lives, and hold my head up with a little pride.

They did this in their moment of glory.  And I am their kin.

Perhaps not kin by blood, but kin by belief.

And our beliefs are what make us who we are.
