I was looking through the CR Sig and stumbled across a thread (IIRC "Celtic Sex Magick") where the author was later banned.  A few people had replied but were later informed that the author was banned and therefore unable to see any further replies.

In an unrelated thread I PM'ed an author (who I later read was close to being banned) but haven't heard back from them.

Does the forum notify people that the person they're replying to or PM'ing has been banned?  Can "banned" people pick up any PM's that might be sent to them even though they're not allowed to post?

Not usually, since most bannings happen in public, just like other kinds of mod action.

Banned members can't sign in, so they can't get their PMs.  The email notification that is sent out when you get a PM does contain the full text of it, however, so I believe they can get them that way.

If you know a member is banned but want to discuss something with them, I guess you could include your e-mail addy in your PM and they could reply to you that way, provided they haven't asked to have their notifications turned off.  (I don't think that happens automatically, but someone more familiar with the software would know better about that)

That's about as much as I know about what happens after bannings.  I'm not aware of any members being 'close to being banned' at the moment, though, so the person you're talking to may be under a misapprehension.

The board software is not written to do that.  I don't think I've any seen any that does.

Can the person be removed as a user?  That way PM'ing them is impossible.  Or, will that removed their previous posts?

Anyway, I suppose it doesn't matter much the likelihood of me wanting to PM a 3rd banned user is probably pretty slim.

That would remove all their posts. We will not do that.

Maybe something saying "banned" could be put on the person's info at the left of the post. I've seen that done on forums...

I don't know...you seem to have a good track record so far! Grin

(Just as a side note)

I'm currently testing phpbb3 and SMF for a customer so I decided play around with the SMF board a bit.  FWIW, SMF does not, by default, remove the messages of deleted users.

We aren't deleting users -- especially not banned users. If we were banning people left and right, I could see why it might cause problems but even then the cure would be worse than the ill IMHO. In reality 90% of the people we ban have posted one spam message -- and no one should need to contact a spammer anyway.

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to push that idea.  I was just following up with a technical FYI so, if you ever need to delete a user (for who knows what reason) you'd know that their messages don't, by default, mysteriously disappear.

Just trying to be helpful Smiley

I'm just trying to head off the requests. Deleting banned users is just a bad idea all around. Even if it can be done without deleting their messages, it would delete all their member info including the ban.  This would let them come back, or worse allow some innocent new user to pick their name by accident.

or worse allow some innocent new user to pick their name by accident.

This exact thing happened on UNRV. There was an (infamous) member who went by the name of Spartacus, and was banned. Someone else came along, and picked the same name. About two weeks later they were allowed a name change...once everyone figured out who they were, they figured out who Spartacus was and why no one liked them!!! Shocked

The site is new. I've wanted to get back into the hobby but loathe most of the D20 stuff and don't have time to run a live game anymore. After discovering by accident that there are people like me out there, I decided to start this site. I have no idea how far it will go, but I'm more interesting in working on a site than I have been in years.

I would like to bring one thing up, if a member is deleted and they have unread pm's it does cause errors in the logs these can be sorted in a maintenance, on SMF we dont delete members, and i know the same happens on many forums, not been to one myself that actually does delete banned members.
