I'm basically up to my ears in books about what paganism is but I'm a bit short on the type with practical exercises for meditation and visualisation. You usually books are heavy in history and info on tools and circles but light on basic ways of making your mind more sensitive...and this is the area I tend to have problems with! Can anyone recommend good meditation books or CDs or witchy books that focus more on the "how to" rather than the "what you need"?

Making your mind more sensitive is in large part, a matter of practice and paying attention. (Parts of this are something I've always had a harder time with, too.)

On books: I don't know how many of these are available in the UK, but some ideas:

Marion Green's _A Witch Alone_ has some great meditation exercises.

Starhawk and Hilary Valentine's _Twelve Wild Swans_ has some fantastic exercises, and they walk you through how you might combine them, use them over time, and  build into an ongoing practice. (You don't need to follow their ideas, but at least it gives you a possible roadmap.) Starhawk's _Spiral Dance_ has some of the same exercises, but I like _Twelve Wild Swans_ better because it avoids some of the poor history issues, and because you get to see them in application a bit better.

If you can find a copy of Yasmine Galenorn's _Embracing the Moon_, she has some excellent non-visual exercises.

I haven't read any of Christopher Penzak's work: some people I know love his stuff, some people dislike it. (I really need to go read them and make up my own mind), but he does lay out a fairly extensive study program to work with.

The book that I would recommend, albeit not Witchcraft influenced in the slightest, is called 'The Intuition Handbook'. I found it in a popular UK bookstore, and not only is it absolutely chock-full of how to meditate and visualise, it also has a lot of information on the chakras, astral projection and all of those types of things. It's a really interesting read, plus is cut down into small chapter sections so that you can easily find what you're looking for.

Although I am not Wiccan, I have used some of Scott Cunningham's books and some of his ideas on visualization... but I personally would recommend almost any Buddhism book on meditation. That is how I learned and I have always enjoyed it. Here is a website that might interest you:

Also, this is just a friendly reminder, you really don't need anything for witchcraft. Everything you need you already have. Your focus and intent are the most important things you possess.

Also, this is just a friendly reminder, you really don't need anything for witchcraft. Everything you need you already have. Your focus and intent are the most important things you possess.

And untrained, unpracticed, unstrengthened, they're useless.

People speak of will, intent, and focus, as if they were no different than 'wishing really hard'.  The exercises the op is asking about are part of the process of learning to APPLY one's will and intent.  It is not a casual thing, or everybody who yearns for a mate would find one, everybody who desparately needs money would get it.

Witchcraft is a craft, a skill, a learned trade as much as an art.  It is not an easy out.  A daydream is not a visualization, focus is not the same as 'thinking about something' for half an hour or so.  Practice in meditation, in breath control, in sensing and raising energy - these are necessary steps in acquiring the power to actually DO anything with magic.

Tools like knives and cups and special shapes may not be necessary (although they are certainly useful).  Tools like concentration, planning, focus are necessary, and don't come 'free'.  To have effective will and intent requires practice, refining of skills, awareness of technique.

'All you need is your own will' completely skips the matter of what 'will' is, how to use it, and how strong it has to be to work.  It's the difference between singing in the shower or around the fire and filling a concert hall.  It takes work.

I completely agree. It does take a lot of work and some have real trouble with meditation, focus and visualization and can never really do it.

I was saying though, that the books on "what you need" are not really useful. Candles, herbs, cups, ect are pretty useless unless you know how to focus or how energy works and flows... like you have stated.

but I'm a bit short on the type with practical exercises for meditation and visualisation.
I also found this site that might help you get started with you meditation practices.

Thanks for the tips guys, I do have one of Penczak's books, his exercises do look fantastic but I'm a bit put off by some of his "history" and so on. I might go back and have another look though, as I'm sure the exercises will come in handy nonetheless. The Intuition handbook sounds particularly good, glad to hear its available in the UK, and I am a big fan of Marian Green too! Havent read 12 Wild Swans, but I enjoyed Spiral Dance so I might take a lookie. Sadly focussing my intent seems to be the problem lol, my mind is about as disciplined as a two year old's. Hence the need of as much help as possible! And yeah I have more than enough of the "what you need". Thanks again.
