Greetings to everyone in the forum!

I'm someone who has recently developed a strong interest in Hellenic Paganism.  I've been doing research on putting together rituals and devotions in order to explore that interest, but I've reached a slight stumbling block when it comes to offerings.

Is there a site or book or something that lists the offerings the Gods like?  I've searched online and have found references to Their preferred incenses etc., and I've found through an online Temple to Hermes that He, for example, likes coins and strawberries, or, through Timothy Jay Alexander's books, that Aphrodite likes emeralds, but I'm at a loss at discovering anything else.  Maybe someone here can point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Cauldron!

Sannion's Compendium of the Gods lists some ideas for each deity, I think:

Happy to help!

Just a quick note, though:  when replying to a post, please don't forget to use the Quote/Reply function and leave the quote code in.  The quote and the link back to the post you're replying to that the code puts in help the rest of us follow the conversation more easily.  Smiley  (You can view the full quoting guidelines in the Rules section, accessible through the menu at the top that also has things like your profile and the search function in it.)  Thanks!

Additionally, just looking at the myths of the gods gives us a lot of ideas as to what might be an appropriate offering...for example, from the mythology of Apollo, one can find bay, cypress, music, poetry, to name a few.

There's also the Orphic hymns, many of which start out with an offering of a specific incense.

...and then you come to UPG. For example, when Dionysus showed up in my life a few months ago, I had just lost my wallet, and wouldn't be able to buy anything for offerings for about a week and a half. So in the meantime, I had to make do with making offerings from what I had available, and in considering my options, a little voice in my head told me that rosemary incense would be the well-received. I offered some, with the promise that I would buy some wine as soon as I was able to. By all indications to me, the incense was well-received, and within hours of having money again, I found myself in front of a liquor store in a location where I would swear there was not one before, but it was clearly not a new business either. I didn't think about the fact that I was still without my ID until I was next in line (I'm 29, but only look about 20 or 21 to many people, I just cannot buy alcohol without being carded.) The girl looked about three times between me and the bottle, shook her head and rang my purchase without asking for ID. Someone wanted his wine and was going to make sure he got it...

But I still offer rosemary incense, and even more frequently, fresh rosemary.

Perhaps you could have something in your book about finding non-traditional offerings for the gods?

On another amusing note regarding offerings to the gods...

This weekend, I had a Ghirardelli dark chocolate bar, and a Lindt cherry-chilli chocolate bar. I decided to give my gods some chocolate. I consider Ghirardelli to be superior chocolate to Lindt, so I gave them some of the Ghirardelli. Amongst a series of wacky, bizarre dreams, I had one about a commercial claiming that occurrences of prophetic dreams are linked to offering the gods Lindt chocolate, and especially cherry-chilli bars. I woke up and considered the possibility that they wanted some and maybe I should offer some of that...but then I expected that I would go back to sleep and have another dream with them pointing and laughing at me, saying "Haha, we got her! Wonder what else we can get her to give us this way?"

Heh heh. Ya never know. *Commercial says: Give the Gods some chocolate...* hmm. Wink
Question: What if you were to offer them something that they particularly hated, then what could you expect? Probably would depend on the God or Goddess in question I suppose, wouldn't it? Tongue

Unfortunately I tend to not remember dreams or anything, so  Cry BUT then again this could be a good thing because the fact that I ended up remembering it might be important in and of itself perhaps. Most of the dreams I do remember either helped me figure out a situation I needed help with or just were a rather good hilarious laugh that made no sense whatsoever. I dont remember the ones that I had remembered but next time, I'm writing those suckers down! Tongue

End of rant, Continue with your lives.  Undecided  Grin

There is a place on the TC website that has tons of information about this.

Thanks to everyone for their replies.  I actually found the above website through Hellenion, and I am using that for my research because of its extensive devotional material.  I just wanted to see what other offerings, besides incense, are associated with each God.
