On most of the other lists i've been on, everyone is assumed to be witchy in one way or another, and if you aren't going to talk about that then you are invited to be quiet or are ignored. Interfaith acceptance and consciousness would be great, and I totally support any endeavor toward that (I am really turning UU, oh dear....).

OK. I guess I can be blunt here. A lot of Recons get sick and tired of having these conversations because it goes far beyond us saying, "We're not X (or are X) and here's why." They end up starting with that and them some little twit comes along and says "Oh yes you are. And here's why." And what ensues is a five day email exchange. Basically, it's a case of people telling you what you believe and, frankly, my giveashitter is broken. I'll be happy to explain it once (maybe even in great detail), but I'm not going to spend days on it. I just don't care enough. It's not up to me to educate every misbegotten pagan who thinks we're all some happy group of clones. I'm a whole lot more likely to tell them to fuck off.

There's a reason I'm only on TC and kept a very limited roster of email lists and forums back when I had more time. I have a certain level of conversation that I expect, and I don't intend for that to include forums and lists where everyone assumes everyone else is witchy or Wiccan or earth-based. It makes me tired and it's pointless.

But I of course understand why you wouldn't want to do it. A giant giant PITA, if ever there was one, that task, but I hope someone will be willing to take it on, more than it is now, one day.

No. I don't want to do it. I don't have time and am not up to it. Plus, I do know several Recons who have written stuff over there. Basically, I don't see WV as a real vehicle for this, though some Recons would disagree with me. It's vastly more productive, I think, to go out and exchange viewpoints and talk to people on boards and forums than to talk at them in an essay. But that's me.

I've got the same book but haven't gotten around to reading it yet, but yeah - since the time I bought it and now, I've also learned that basic truth.  So, I gotta take the book with a grain of salt when I get to it. Still, it's worth having if for no other reason that the authors have my same namesake - a rather amazing coincidence considering the uncommon status of the name,  I might add..  and you can see why I don't usually go by my paternal name..  12 letters/4 syllables  is a PITA!  lol

And it's a real shame about that book. I think there's a huge area that has been overlooked (or at least was during the time I was interested in reading more on Wicca 101). The male side of paganism is so very frequently overlooked and it's a real shame.

Smiley I used to tilt this particular windmill all over Delphi. Then I realized that I was exhausting and pissing myself off.

I understand. I have a few pet peeves that can totally get me going, fortunately I have not run into them much here...maybe just a little... Roll Eyes It is really hard to give up fighting the good fight, but usually that's the best thing to do, for all concerned.

Which reminds me of another book I bought but haven't read yet ( I'm chipping away on my library, slowly but surely!): Bonewit's "The Pagan Man".  Actually, I bought that early on, I saw it at Borders and had a coupon.   Wink  There's still a few others I want to read first though.

For studying and such, which books and authors do you recommend? Which ones should be avoid? I know SRW is one, but anyone else? Just to mention, I've read Scott Cunningham's Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner.

Well, my first book was Buckland's Big Book of Witchcraft (and still have).  He's kinda stuffy and over-bearing, but the Big Book is more of a work book and it really helped in teaching me to write my own rituals and prayers.

Not related to my question in any way, but I'm currently reading Witchcraze by Anne Llewellyn Barstow, which is non-fiction, and very interesting and historical. Though, I have a hard time keeping my attention towards the book sometimes. Today was an exception, though. I somehow managed to put my full attention towards it.

I really enjoyed Thea Sabins "Wiccan for Beginners: Fundamentals of Philosophy and Practice".. It was an easy read and it tought me things that not many other books had tought me. I thought the author was very good at explaining things and in good detail.
