Ok, so I am currently studying Arabic and though it is a language course getting on to a third of it is devoted to learning culture and discussing the politics of Arabic speaking areas. We are currently looking at the two Gulf Wars and their effects on Iraq. Our professor has some past students who then went on to join the military and have sent him back information provided by the military with regards to culture and language in Iraq. We are currently looking at the "Iraq Culture Smart Card" given to troops in Iraq (It's for the Marines I believe) and have to write a response to it and to the way in which the military attempts to teach Iraqi culture to its recruits.

Anyway, enough with the background... I was wondering if anyone who has served in the Middle East could tell me what further info they received on culture and language. Was a "Culture Smart Card" and a small leaflet of basic Arabic all you got or where further courses in culture and language at least offered? General experiences about communication both with regards to culture and language would also be appreciated.
