A whiff of scent is no cure for what ails you
Aromatherapy study shows lemon, lavender cause no physical changes

Here’s some unsettling news for anyone who ever sniffed a scented candle, essential oil or pricey pillow spray, hoping for healing or another kind of physical boost.

It doesn’t work.

Good thing for me I wasn't expecting physical change then...  I wasn't aware they were alleged to cause actual physical change.  I always thought aromatherapy was more about the emotional effects various scents had than physical effects.  Huh

It doesn’t work.

I'm not surprised as I have always been skeptical. However, even skeptical me has to point out that this study does not address any other scents nor any combinations of scents. Personally, I don't expect useful physiological changes from any of them -- but the possibility that they might cause such changes can't be ruled out from this study.

yeah, I'm with the "what was it supposed to do?" thing.

I've always assumed aromatherapy was at least a mind-over-matter thing - a relaxing scent relaxes the mind which affects the body, etc.

That's pretty much where I am, too. Though I did figure on blood pressure changes as a person relaxed.

Things like aromatherapy have always struck me as more of a compliment to other treatments than much else. Relaxation, evocation of memories and that sort of thing that can make you react to *other* treatments. I never really saw it as a treatment in its own right.

I've always seen aromatherapy as an adjunctive modality.  It's great for setting a background mood in the room much like soft music and diffuse lighting do.  I find this quote from the article interesting:

Quote
Oh, lemon oil certainly boosted mood, husband-and-wife scientists Ronald Glaser and Janice K. Kiecolt-Glaser report in the March issue of the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.

Based on that I would be interested in seeing MRI results pre-/post- sniff.  I think that's where they're going to see the greatest change in the human body.

I actually keep a bottle of peppermint essential oil on my desk at work for the purpose of taking a minute or two to stop everything I'm doing and simply inhale the scent.  It's the combination of the scent and breathing that actually helps me shift my focus from whatever maelstrom that's going on to a few quiet moments of peace.

The molecules of your body are the same molecules that make up this station, and the nebula outside, that burn inside the stars themselves. We are starstuff.
