I mean, does anyone seriously think we're slipping a bomb in by putting it in a nipple ring?

Of course.  You pull on the ring, and the whole breast goes up like a grenade.  This should be obvious, right?  Wink

Apparently someone has figured out just what a PR disaster this is.

The only thing that gets me is this; the following quote is from the original article.

Quote
"If you are selected for additional screening, you may ask to remove your body piercing in private as an alternative to a pat-down search," the site says.

But she was forced to remove the body piercing. How is that "properly following procedure" as the new article claims the TSA officers claims? I don't see why the policy needs to be changed- the original policy was fine. It just wasn't being enforced correctly.

Here is the TSA webpage as of 3/29/2008 about screening of people with piercings.
http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/screening/index.shtm

What I can't tell is when it was originially posted. It does track with what the originial news article said. Either remove it or get groped.

Hidden items such as body piercings may result in your being directed to additional screening for a pat-down inspection.  If selected for additional screening, you may ask to remove your body piercing in private as an alternative to the pat-down search.

Here is the Thousand Stupid Agents press release about Lubbock.

http://www.tsa.gov/press/happenings/lubbock.shtm

Note that it says nothing about a pat down option.

I'm really starting to take an even bigger dislike of TSA.  http://www.tsa.gov/press/speeches/012308_fanguy_house.shtm  This guy can't seem to say more than a paragraph without lying or shading the truth or just using double speak gobblygook.

A Texas woman who said she was forced to remove a nipple ring with pliers in order to board an airplane called Thursday for an apology by federal security agents and a civil rights investigation.

There is also a case of a gal who runs Romantsy.com (custom made corsets)  and she was saying one time how the airport a woman went into the bathroom with her to show her nothing was under it.... Yep really going to have a weapon under a tight laced corset!  j
And you know my nose ring doubles as a spear! just like the pen in Percy Jackson!  really...... again a case where common sense is not common.....

It's not that those things are, or can conceal, weapons themselves; it's that the screeners have to ascertain that the positive reading by the metal detector was only from those things, and not from something problematic concealed elsewhere on one's person.

That said, yeah, the procedures aren't always sensical in terms of what they're actually supposed to achieve.

I have a carseat tightening thingy, and since we're be in a different car when we arrive and I'm putting in the carseat while everyone else is loading luggage, I keep it in my carry on backpack.  The first time through security I didn't realize what chaos it would cause.  Backpack put through the x-ray 3x, finally they asked me to open my backpack, then they couldn't figure out what it was that was showing up funny, in between the baby toys and the crayon boxes.

Finally after emptying EVERYTHING out, the gal realizes it was the carseat tightner.  Add another ten minutes to explain what it was and how it works, finally when my kids start pantomiming demonstrations the gal was good with it.

Lately to make it all run smoother I just keep the carseat tightner in hand and hand it to the screening gal and explain upfront what it is.  It's actually pretty innocent looking.  It's a square gizzy with slots for the belts to run through and a ratchet wheel that the belt wraps around.
