Dangerous animal virus on U.S. mainland?
Fears arise over government plans to move foot and mouth disease lab

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration is likely to move its research on one of the most contagious animal diseases from an isolated island laboratory to the U.S. mainland near herds of livestock, raising concerns about a catastrophic outbreak.

This was the part that got me:

"The Homeland Security Department is convinced it can safely operate the lab on the mainland, saying containment procedures at high-security labs have improved."

No. Improved isn't good enough. Only perfect is good enough. And some of the states they're looking at have incredibly high cattle populations. No way in hell do you want foot and mouth loose in Texas or Kansas.

This is one of the more dangerous decisions the Bushies have made yet. I suspect it will get a LOT of opposition in Congress -- even from Republicans in states with lots of cattle (like Texas).

I hope your right, but I have almost given up that congress will do anything constructive.

The main danger is that Bush will just order it done and Congress will have to try to stop him.  Congress doesn't have much balls, but the Cattle industry does and I suspect they will raise a huge stink.

And you think about how much Bush loves big business that someone would've pointed this out to him Roll Eyes

I could actually see an attack on this lab as a piece of terrorism.  It would be much simpler once it's in a major cattle state.

I could too. And I'm pretty sure you and I aren't the only ones who've thought of that.

This is a group that clearly is utterly unfamiliar with the Reston Ebola outbreak.

Shocked Grrrrr! My mom was one of the folks that tried to clean up after the foot and mouth outbreak in England... believe me, not pretty. They're still dealing with it and it's been years. *sigh* I really don't want to see this again.

I like the comment that there are financial concerns about running a facility that is only accesible by ferry and helicopter.  Personally, I would consider it a plus.  If there is a containment problem, make the ferry and helicopter go back to whichever side it started the trip on, disable the helicopter if it is on lthe island, and airlift supplies.

The Bush Administration is trying to cut EVERYTHING possible so because their war is expensive and their ideology says never raise taxes (and cut them more on the wealthy).

Sometimes I wonder if Bush is happy that he wrecked the entire economy.  Like that's what he purposefully set out to do when he was first sworn in.
