Greetings all!

So, in my slow but ever on-going want to craft things made of wood, namely Staffs and Wands, I've came here to ask: What's the best Wood Carving/Burning tools?

I'm asking because I picked up a 'dinky' little set from Hobby Lobby, thinking it'd be 'fair' to get started, but I swear to the Heavens that be it wasn't worth anything!

Ideas? Thoughts? Ways of going about?
I realize this is a very old thread and you are probably a master woodcarver by now with a complete woodworking shop, but I came across this while searching for something else and thought I would offer a tip -- in case anyone else is interested in this topic.

One of the very best tools you can use to get an absolutely flawlessly smooth finish on a piece of wood is free. Find yourself a pane of glass and break it. Use all the small pieces of different shapes to scrape with exactly the way you would use wood planes. Since glass fractures conchoidally you will get curved pieces as well as straight, so you can shape rounded things like wands and staffs without making gouges or lines in the surface. Sandpaper actually roughens the surface of wood because it tears the fibers, but glass cuts through them to create a cleaner, smoother surface.

You may want to wear gloves or wrap the holder end of your glass shard with duct tape of something, though - you want to cut the wood, not your hands. Wink
