Are folks still interested in Avatar making contests? It seems that this rather dropped of the edge of the board at some point during our last contest which, if I remember correctly, ended back in February.

For folks who don't know, the Avatar Contests were themed competitions which were about a month or two long (this rather depended on how busy folks were) which were then judged by an open vote. The avatars had to meet the forum avatar guidelines (size etc.) in order to qualify, but otherwise the judging was based on how well it fitted the theme and the aesthetic preference of the voters.

This post is just to see if folks are still interested in this and also if BeachGlass is still interested in running it.

Well, I like seeing what people come up with. Smiley And I might even give it a try myself.

If members are still interested but Beachglass doesn't have time/interest, someone else can step forward to run them. They really aren't that hard to run.

Let's wait and see who else posts as interested. If no one else offers I could probably run it, but I want to see if folks are interested first.

I'm still interested, but I don't always participate in the various challenges- my inspiration is a little hard to come by sometimes! Cheesy

Got any photo-editing software? GIMP? Photoshop? Some nice photos and a few images in your head you want to turn into something others can see? A basic tutorial can give you enough understanding of your software to be able to do the vast majority of different effects. There's also a lot of open source pictures online so you can literally make any image you can imagine. Seriously... it's incredibly simple if you have the software and that doesn't need to be expensive (I use open source so it's free).

There's far more information available out there, but I'm 1/2 asleep so... Honestly, the easiest way to figure it out is just to play around with the tools you have/can get for free. Folks here can help you resize it to fit the guidelines afterwards.

The only thing I have is a Kodak thing and I'm pretty sure that's not what you mean.  Where can you go to do it online for free?

The Kodak is a good start! That'll get you the photos Wink . As to the second question, what operating system do you have? This link gives some good systems if you are on Windows. I currently use GIMP (the Linux version) and I love it so I imagine their recommendation of GIMP for Windows is a solid one. As for the others they recommend the only one I have experience with is Serif and I used it in conjunction with another editor (can't remember which) as neither of them had all the tools I wanted, but together they did well so... I don't really recommend this. Unless someone who has used the Windows version contradicts me here then I would recommend you go for GIMP. Of course all of this is not applicable if you are on another operating system Smiley .

Paint.NET (Windows only) is probably easier to use than the GIMP. Not quite as powerful, but powerful enough for most non-professional use.

Alright, so we're up to 4 so far plus me. What do folks think of that as a competition pool? Is it too small? Hopefully some more folks will bite in the next few days.

I'd trust Randall on the Paint.net recommendation then. The link I gave you before has a review of it and a link to the site for download.

Edited to add: It is the third one in their list.

I'd trust Randall on the Paint.net recommendation then.

It's not so much that is is better than The GIMP, but that it has a standard interface. The GIMP's interface is non-standard in modern Linux and it is completely alien to windows users.
