What does Ritual mean to you??

The first thing that springs to my mind are the reasons for having ritual.  There are three that I might do a ritual for:
1.  To honor or connect with a deity.
2.  To recognize something as important (like a holiday).
3.  To do magic.

Why is it important to do Ritual??

Well, I don't think that it's necessarily important to do ritual.  Ritual in and of itself is not important to me. It's the work of the ritual that matters.  One could accomplish any of the above tasks without a formal ritual.

Planning a ritual helps me to really think about the work I want to do and examine it in-depth.  I'll generally put more time and effort into the work if I complete it ritual-style.  Ritual brings a feeling of formality and completeness to the work.

The first thing I'm compelled to do with these questions is put them OUT of the context of religion per se.  The human brain is really wired for ritual if you think about it.  Some of them are practical, like brushing our teeth every day at certain times, or setting our keys in the same place when we come home from work or school.  Other things are celebratory, like birthdays or anniversaries.  And others mark particular occasions like weddings or funerals.  Humans LIKE ritual.

Ritual puts you in a specific mindset.  Preps you for a specific task or marks some important event.  Even if that important event is: It's Friday.  The moon is full.  It's 12 noon. And so on.

I spend way too much time in my head, listening to my own inner monologue.

Ritual is the easiest way I've found so far to bypass that.  It lets be bring both my body and my subconscious into the act of worship, celebration or magic.
