The form that was used in medieval Europe was from a Welsh root word meaning "oath breaker"

OTOH ...

IIRC, there was also a similar Norse word that translates as "spirit song", and could loosely be interpreted as referring to a shamanic practice
I've usually seen the source of the root given as Scottish, which I'm pretty sure means Scots-dialect English, an Anglo-Saxon language.

The Icelandic word you're thinking of is "vardlokkur".

I'm thinking based on something I read 10 - 15 years ago, so it wouldn't be all that surprising if my memory is a bit fuzzy

A Brief History of Weirdness and The Cauldron

It's nice to know that TC has a seedy background, especially in the Grey Mists.

I was wondering, is it taboo to refer to oneself as a Warlock or is it permissible?

I'll throw in a little Biblical quote here... "All things are permissible, but not all things are beneficial."

Perception is the reality of the perceiver. What you choose to call yourself will have a good deal of bearing on how others percieve you. If you are comfortable with the term, as well as the perception of others, then go for it. If you are comfortable with the term, but not the perception of others, than give it some thought before you apply a label to yourself.

Now that being said, here is a question for you...

Why do you need a label of any kind?

Blessings,

Ishanna

Well, if you plan on talking with people, labels come in very handy. Without them, most communication is pointless.
