I had never heard this term until a few years ago, when a pantheonist coworker shared it with me, so I guess my definition is hers: Someone who is entrenched in the practices of earth religions, but has an unbalanced positive view of the Universe, focuses only on practices that are "neat," and/or avoids more advanced study or practices because they may be somehow associated with negativity. For example, a practitioner who has convinced herself that past Pagans lived in a Utopia and that sacrifices, war and pain did not exist; a practitioner who only practices if (s)he can use a crystal pendulum, ankle bells or tools with fairies on them; a practitioner who denies that sacrifice of any kind, glossolalia, Divine posession or other practices are valid for Pagans, simply because they might cast a shadow on an eternally positive view.

IMO, there's nothing inherently wrong with being a fluffy. Each person needs something different from his/her beliefs, and most of us have gone through a phase of needing the constant positive reinforcement and powerful hope that can come from a fluffy path. However, a fluffy who remains a fluffy forever will probably not grow and evolve as much as (s)he could have if (s)he embraced the duality of Paganism. Just my two cents...

I agree w/ this post.  I always think of cotton candy when I hear it's all white light etc.  That's what I've always thought of fluff bunnies as.  If you don't acknowledge the oppositon in the Universe, you are missing out on a lot.  IMO go for the Yin/Yang, baby!

Something else that they share:  a lot of people have mentioned that fluff bunnies have a tendancy towards persecution complexes.  This is also extremely common among the fundie Christians that I've known.

I would never have thought it until recently, but I read an article where teen/young adult Christians were talking about being persecuted for being Christian. Part of me doubts it, but wonders if the persecution of FUNDIES/FLUFFIES is real?

Depends on your definition of persecution.

If you mean people refusing to agree with them and arguing with their statements, sure it's true.  But that's not really persecution, is it?

But to some people?  It is.  Anything other than their domination is persecution.

It may be that they think that anyone who disagrees with their beliefs are secretly out to get them?

Reconstructed religions, on the other hand, seem to attract a LOT more fundies than fluffies -- the emphasis on primary texts and historical accuracy are anathema to fluffies, but ideal means for fundies to express their pathology."

That's certainly been my experience.  In fact, I'd don't think I've ever met a fluffy recon. I've met people who called themselves recons (but obviously were not in any usual definition of the term) who were fluffy, but that's it.  On the other hand, I've met far too many fundie recons all of whom have the "one true way" to reconstruct their chosen religion and who get very annoyed at those who dare to disagree with them on the issue.

So what I'm getting is that fluffies and fundies are related species with these differences:

Fluffies tend to think the world is all love and light where nothing you can do  can ever go wrong.  But I know off some fluffies that believes in a dark side and seem to be afraid of it.  Also would the persecution complex many of them seem to have shows they do know of dark forces?

Fundies believe in a version of hell in which everyone who their god deems "undesirable" will go.  Except when the individual fundie does sinful things.  Then it's not sin or hypocrisy because God loves them more than anyone.

I agree here and w/ all subsequent replies and posts.  I see little difference between the two when it comes to being determiined that they are right and a lot of figertips in the ears accompanied with LALALALALA!  I participate recently in a new thought organization where the fluffiness ('it's all God/good') can be so irritating, yet it most closely fits my frame of mind that your thought produces much of your reality.  I just don't like to see them be willfully ignorant that opposition exists in the Universe.

They also closely seem to mimic the Christians in their persecution complex.  Having used to be Christian, I see it clearly.

Also a tendency to be elitist in their thinking (*sigh, if only they were elightened like we are*), which I see as hypocrisy seeing as how they profess to believe that all paths to god are the right one. !   Shocked

What is your definition of a Fluff Bunny??

In addition to what others have said, I'd like to make a comment about identification with beliefs.  This behaviour isn't restricted solely to fluffy bunnies, but I do see it sometimes.  Some people identify so strongly with their beliefs, that if you criticise their beliefs or ideas/ arguments, they take it that you're attacking *them.*  Thus, people arguing a counter-point become Mean People.

You're not a knitter by any chance, are you?  Someone just asked the same question over at Ravelry.com...
