I can't always remember my craft name.  In fact, I have a hard time remembering it.  I've been sitting here for almost half an hour trying to remember what it is.  On the other hand, I can visualize the rune that makes up my craft name very easily, even when I can't remember what it means.  I use the rune for all my crafting (I even have it tattooed on my back) and only the orginal members of a coven that has long since dissolved know what it is.  I'm not even sure they remember what it is.

I'm kinda confused here.  If you can't remember your craft name that the rune represents or what it means, doesn't the symbol lose some of it's 'power'?

Not necessarily.  A symbol doesn't need a specific meaning past "That's my craft name" to gain power.  It's the power you put into it.

I tried to come up with a craft name before being initiated into a group wherein everyone else had a craft name. I tried different combinations of words describing my interests, such as crystal, spirit, dancer, luna, etc. I worked on this for several days, but no dice. Nothing felt right.

Then I decided to just get way from the idea of words and to work with sound and vibration. I came up with Lamara, and that was almost it, but the first A just didn't "feel right." I emailed this to a friend, and she wrote back, "How about LUmara?" I felt this inner "click" of recognition, and knew that was my name.

So I consider Lumara to be my spiritual, rather than my craft name.  Smiley

I don't subscribe to the belief that giving someone your craft name grants them power over you.

I completely agree with this 100%, though my craft name isn't known by many people, but rather my spiritual name...  My spiritual name is the name I recently joined this forum with, Alastriona.  I don't mind anyone knowing it, and because I feel this name is personal to me, I don't mind sharing it with people who are or can potentially become personal to me also.

I once read somewhere one witches opinion of craft names, and the public use of one's craft name on the internet is a desperate cry for attention, which I feel is one crazy opinion to have.  I believe craft names are to be used of that individual's own desire, whether it be secret or public.
