Then I realize that many of our pets have better healthcare than most American children, and that seems just as ridiculous.

Right now Miss Kitty has the better insurance than anyone in my house. Preston has insurance, I'm uninsured. But her policy makes his look like a joke. We adopted her from the Humane Society through PetSmart and take her to Banfield - she's in their Wellness program. She's on the basic plan for $11.95 (iirc) a month, and what it covers and does is unreal. Her last trip in was almost $300 - we paid $25 and that was for the Benadryl and Ketophyn (sp?) shots her policy doesn't cover.
