Lately I find myself engaging in petty, fruitless and energy draining religious debates on message forums. This is not who I want to be. I'm not a drama queen, but for the past month or so I find myself seeking out threads on religious message boards that I know will offend or upset me just so I can throw my .02 into the fray. It has been distracting me from practicing the Craft and has been putting a lot of negative energy in my life. I'd really appreciate some prayers or good vibes sent my way so that I can abstain from deliberately seeking out messages that I know will upset me and curbing the urge to respond to them when I do accidentally stumble upon them. Thank you so much in advance!

Yep, some discussion are really just unnecessary drama, especially when people are unclear about what they disagree on and don't listen to each other, been through that.

Some forums (like this) have ignore functions, where you can ignore specific posters if the messages which irritate you always come from the same person/s. Of course you'd still have to controll yourself, but it could be helpful. Good luck!

Ditto.  Then again if you waste the time every time someone on the internet is wrong, you'll find yourself with no life offline.  Sometimes it's better to just let people ramble, they will usually show their true colors in time.

That's exactly why there's an ignore button and we tell people to use it. For all the time it takes to run a message board, I really don't want to increase it because I'm having to babysit two people.

You might try taking a break from those boards completely -- cold turkey is often the only way to break a cycle like this.

I think you probably need to figure out why you keep engaging in behavior that you know isn't good for you.

There's got to be /something/ you're getting from it - a feeling of being right?  virtue?  the warm fuzzy glow of the righteously repressed?  something?

Figuring out why you keep doing it will help a LOT in figuring out how to stop! Smiley

Hmm, sounds to me like there's something-or-other that has you really PO'd and that you need to rant/vent about, but it's not at a conscious level so you can't identify it; instead, you're seeking out alternate rant targets in hope that it'll let off steam and relieve the need.  This could be an entirely unrelated sort of thing (family conflicts, workplace conflicts, cheesed off about some social justice issue, whatever), but it's more likely that there'd be some correlation to stupidity/offensiveness in the name of religion.

So it seems to me that it might be helpful for you to ask yourself what it is that has you in a fightin' mood in the first place.

Have you tried venting through a personal journal or blog?  You can make a Livejournal blog completely private if you want.  Sometimes I'll vent my butt off on LJ, but I'll do it privately. Then I'll look at the entry a week later and see if it's really something I want people to read.  It keeps me from posting something inflamatory or controversial on impulse, which has spared me a lot of drama.

Just a thought Smiley
