Robot Finds Mars Dry So Far

Quote
Scientists have found no indications so far of water in the first soil sample delivered to NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander, they announced on Monday.

Man. I'm really outta the loop the past few weeks...I can't believe I'm just know hearing about this.

I'm thinking it could be CO2 ice, but it kinda looks like sandstone to my untrained eye.  And it kinda looks like the galaxy in the marble at the end of MIB. Smiley

And it's WATER ICE!  I've been desperate to post this all day!

NASA Phoenix Mars Lander Confirms Frozen Water

Quote
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Scientists relishing confirmation of water ice near the surface beside NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander anticipate even bigger discoveries from the robotic mission in the weeks ahead.

And they've found:
Quote
A hard material, possibly more ice, but darker than the bright material in the first trench, has been detected in a second trench, to the northeast of the lander.

In light of this, the darker patch could be water w/organics in it!

It probably is, but they are going to have to catch some and test it before everyone will believe it.

Yeah, but unhappy w/NASA though I am at the moment, on this I'm inclined to believe them simply because of how tremendous the backlash might be if they were wrong.  I figure they wouldn't be too likely to anounce it if they weren't certain.
