Cast a ward

How do you go about casting a ward? There are many different ways to do it. I was just wondering how YOU did it.

On the flip side, part of gives ritual its power and comfort is that you can come to it in different ways.

....it becomes a part of you, and all the ways that you approach it -- excited, bored, laughing, restless, reverent, meditative, daydreaming, impatient, glad to get out of the house -- become a part of it too, which gives it a great deal of power to create a "home" for you when you need one, because it's already accommodated a full range of emotions and you can approach it from so many directions. ...

This is also why many (not all) world religions have a single or pair of ritual structures with interchangeable parts...

Thanks, I never realized it at all but that makes a lot of sense. And it's very useful...*goes off to ponder*

I'm not really sure how to explain this LOL. But since you asked, I'll try.

I cast the ward with my dagger (athame...whatever you want to call it). I start by pulling energy into myself, directed out through the blade. I walk or turn in a circle around the room and "see" the energy from the point of the blade soaking into the walls and forming a sort of 'web' over the walls. I go around the room and make a 'cross' of energy over all the windows and doors. Then I come back to the center, hold the point of the blade at the ceiling, projecting energy into the ceiling forming the 'top half' of the ward. In one quick movement I drive it into the floor (not too hard. Don't need holes in the floor!) to form the bottom half.

When finished it should "look" like a web of energy totally covering the room, with reinforced doors and windows. Cheesy

I do a similar thing for setting up mirror wards, but I usually use my finger, or a crystal point. But I do have lots of different permanent wards here and there. I have several charged and charmed chunks of blacktop i've picked up at the beach for absorbing negative energy, a big one is buried under the front step, and I have little ones on the kitchen counter and in my car. I ward myself with specific pieces of protective jewelry. I sometimes use ghost mix to protect and clear out specific areas, but salt and pepper work well for that too. You can also make witch balls or bottles, and hang them in your window or bury them, there are many good spells out there for that.

Blacktop? How interesting...how well do you find it works, compared to other things?

If it's a chunk I find on the beach, and it's properly charged, it works pretty well, as long as I remember to recharge it every now and again. It's not as potent as, say, a good chunk of obsidian, but also much easier to find, free, and it does hold up really well if it's periodically recharged, especially if it's used in a protective matrix with other things.

Aren't you a little worried about the toxicity of having blacktop on your kitchen counter?

I see. I can't say it wouldn't work (I'm a bit of a tech mage myself. So I don't see anything TOO odd about using blacktop hunks.) But I do wonder about it being the best thing to use.

Sperran
no, b/c of where it is; it is a small piece and part of little altar near the farthest end of the counter, behind the sink. It's not anywhere near food prep or anything like that. But that is an important point, and if I had littles around I would not have a piece where they could reach it or play with it.

I am a big believer in using the materials at hand for magical purposes. I live in the city, and use urban objects and places for my workings pretty often.

I don't know, but it does. I expect it's from roads torn up in Japan, or something.

That's crazy!

Why? It's an urban beach. I've seen full truck axles washed up on that beach.
