Recently I changed my display name from "Arachne" to "Malkin"...I kept debating whether or not to announce it. It's not like I've been some big mover on the board, but, in case anyone's been confused, Hi, I'm Malkin - I used to be "Arachne."  Grin

The name change is coming at a turning point in my life; I'm to be initiated soon (I know I've been saying that for months, but really! lol) and I'm feeling a shift in animal influences in my life. Though "spider" is still a big part of who I am, "cat," who's always been around, is announcing its takeover.

That's what "malkin" means: cat. Actually, it means several things: a cat, a hare, a scarecrow or grotesque effigy, a mop made of rags, or an untidy woman. I think it must have some root word with a connotation of "raggedness." But yeah - sounds kind of punk rock, don't you think?

I've been learning more about cats, and it seems that, along with witches, cats have normally been associated with love, pleasure, and sexuality, and were sacred to goddesses like Freya, Aphrodite, and Bast. That's always an archetype I've had trouble communing with - the "sexy mama" goddess. It's always been difficult to view it through a female understanding (rather than through the eyes of a horney male sculptor). But hopefully I'll learn to positively get in touch with that somehow.

Thessaly: It's time to draw down the moon.
Foxglove: We did this. Or something like this. We had water and salt, not blood. We invoked the goddess in her aspect as the moon. We called down her power...
Thessaly: Did she answer you?
Foxglove: Well, it felt good at the time. Empowering.
Thessaly: Hmph.
