What is your favourite type of music?  Genres, artists, etc?

For me I am a big fan of neofolk stuff, usually some of the stuff coming out of Europe.

Qntal, Omnia, Monica Richards, etc.

So, how about you?

Looking at the title of the thread and then at the question--do you mean to ask about specifically pagan-themed music, or just music in general?

If you have specific Pagan themed music that you really like, then pagan-themed.  If not, then music in general.

Hope that helps to clarify,

Thanks.  Smiley  In that case:

I tend to have favorite songs (or, rarely, albums) rather than artists or genres.  My playlist is pretty eclectic.  Right now I guess I'm leaning toward harder-rock-type things, but there's plenty of other stuff in there too.  If I had to narrow it down to artists, I guess I'd say Evanescence, Metallica, Breaking Benjamin to some degree, Over the Rhine, Diana Krall, Carrie Newcomer, Collide...  And I'm giving Fallout Boy, My Chemical Romance, the White Stripes, and the Raconteurs a try right now, so they come up fairly often in my playlist even though I wouldn't yet rate them favorites.

That's not necessarily representative of what I listen to and enjoy, though; they just have heavy representation on my playlist right this moment.

There's actually not a lot of specifically Pagan music in my list.  A little bit of Emerald Rose, a few Inkubus Sukkubus songs, a scattering of miscellaneous stuff I picked up years ago from WitchVox's Bardic Circle when it was just starting out.  That's about it, I think.

I listen to just about everything, but my favorites are blues/blues rock.  Anything with a good guiter.

For specifically pagan music, you can't go wrong with Phoenyx (if you can find a copy of their out of print album) or the solo work of their singer, Heather Alexander (- who is now Alexander James Adams.  I haven't heard him perform since the gender transition, but I'm sure he's still brilliant.)

I don't really listen to much "pagan" music, though a few of my more mainstream favorites will wander into pagan-dom from time to time .  Jethro Tull has a few good songs with a pagan theme.  And Fields of the Nephilihim [sp?] has some interesting Crowley-esque lyrics.

I'm mostly in the British influenced folk place, except where living in Minnesota since 1999 means people keep handing me interesting Nordic-based stuff. I make distinctions between 'ritual music', 'stuff that sets mood', and 'stuff that helps me think/process/mull over in useful ways'. I do a lot of playlists for specific purposes: seasonal ones, ones focused on different elements, and often playlists for different ongoing workings or goals.

Stuff by Pagans for Pagans in my iTunes: Some stuff designed for ritual music, some general music.
Castalia (harp and voice: she's an Alexandrian priestess)
Cynthia McQuillin's _Witch's Dance_
Damh the Bard (a recent discovery)
Elaine Silver (somewhat on the New Age side for me, but individual good bits)
Elvendrums
Emerald Rose (Classic!)
Flight of the Hawk
Francesca De Grandis
Gaia Consort
Gypsy
Jaiya
Kiva
Laura Powers
Libana (some of which is explicitly Pagan, some of which comes from other traditions/cultures.)
Maddy Prior's _Year_ album (her other stuff is also good, but not in this category).
Reclaiming
Revel Moon
Robert Gass (same deal as Libana: some Pagan stuff, some other stuff.)
Ruth Barrett
Ruth McKenzie's _Kalevala: Dream of the Salmon Maiden_  (probably my most played: I don't think she's Pagan, but the story definitely is)
Shawna Carol
Spiral Dance
Spiral Rhythm
Thorn Coyle
Three Weird Sisters

Stuff that's pretty Pagan-friendly: by which I mean they're not pieces designed for ritual or expressing explicitly Pagan cosmology all the time, but they get at a lot of the right feel.
Avalon Rising
Blackmore's Night
Cat's Laughing
Flash Girls
Gabrielle Roth (used for moving meditation work.)
Gjallarhorn (Scandinavian)
Heather Alexander (likewise haven't heard the post transition stuff, but hope to soon)
Heather Dale
Holly Tannen
Jethro Tull
Kate Price
June Tabor's solo stuff.
Loreena McKennitt
Mediaeval Baebes
Mary McLaughlin (especially her "Sealwoman/Yundah")
October Project
Sharon Knight
Uffington Horse

Other stuff that might be relevant or that has specific personal meaning:
Adiemus
Fairport Convention
Steeleye Span
(Ok, and bunches of other traditional British folk music)
Ulali (First People's music)
The Wailin' Jennys
Wild Mercy

I don't think I really listen to any Pagan-specific music, though I could be missing subtext or something. I listen to a lot of opera and a vast amount of the hugely diverse artists lumped under the "classical" umbrella, so there's plenty of Pagan inspiration there -- Apollo et Hyacinthe is not a Pagan opera, for example, despite its subject matter (not to mention that all of the gay is excised from the myth, which as you'd imagine makes it a very different thing). I am pretty much in love with Joanna Newsom, CocoRosie, Billie Holiday, Xiu Xiu, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, Yann Tiersen, The Mountain Goats, and Belle and Sebastian, as well as artists along those lines. Their music shows up pretty often in my magic and ritual, not because the intent of the artists was in that direction but because certain songs I spend a lot of time with take on a lot of meaning for me of the sort that's useful in magic particularly.

I don't know the terms for various types of music, so I'll just recommend doing a YouTube search for Wendy Rule(Creator/Destroyer is sheer awesome) and Spiral Dance.  Spiral Dance is performing near here in August; I can't wait!  In the meantime, I'll continue to save up my cash to order some albums online.

I have a wide variety of music I adore.  I listen to everything from classical symphony to heavy metal.  My father is a pianist and I grew up listening to him play his piano in the room next to my bedroom every night.  He was even in several bands that I was kind of a miniature roadie for.  I guess that experience taught me to love music even more.

Two of my favorite bands of all time are Queen and Nine Inch Nails.   I also like Enya, Cher, Rod Stewart, George Michael, Mika, U2 and many others.  One of my favorite date-night activities is going to the Symphony.

Really, there are only a few types of music that I don't really care for.  Those being, namely, jazz and gangsta rap.  I like some rap and hip-hop and R&B, but the hardcore cussing every other word kind of rap is just trash for me.  Jazz, for the most part, is just chaotic noise in my opinion.  It's just something I could never get myself to get into.

There is only METAL!  JK

Some bands for a more heathen perspective are:

Tyr
Turisas
Ensiferum
Eluveitie
Amon Amarth

and

Man O War (although it is the "Charmed" of asatru and generates alot of Bezerker wannabes, it is still really good)

...the "Charmed" of asatru...
Shocked  My brain hurts.

I also wanted to add that there is music that is not pagan in the least (except maybe by some Fundie's twisted pov) which is very useful for putting me in the right frame of mind, or reminds me of lessons I'm meant to be learning.  SRV's "Look at Little Sister," Santana's "Dance Sister Dance", anything by the Doors or Billie Holiday, much stuff by the Cult, Lizst's Hungarian Rhapsodies... to name just a small sample.

I'm addicted to music, so maybe the gods find it an easy way to reach me.

My favourite musical genre is rock, most especially with orchestral and/or choral undertones. Evanescence and Within Temptation are my favourites. The latter of which has rather 'pagan-friendly' lyrics. Then of course there is their one song 'Mother Earth' which is entirely Pagan. I love it  Smiley  But I love the song for itself. The fact that the lyrics fit my religious beliefs is just a bonus.

Well, my first love is classical music.  When I was 8 years old, Dad took the family to see Walt Disney's Fantasia.  It had volcanoes and dinosaurs, mythical creatures on Mt. Olympus, and a mountain that turned into a giant demon that tormented naked spirits.  WOW! Just what every boy dreamed of.  This was back before home video tapes (if you could imagine that) so the only way to relive the movie was to listen to the soundtrack.  This got me into a lifelong love of classical music.

When I was in high school, Mannheim Steamroller's Fresh Aire albums got me turned on to New Age music which branched into Celtic and Native American music.  In college I discovered jazz. In recent years I have discovered various types of darker, gothy music.

Recently , I have been listening to a lot of Sarah Brightman and Nightwish.  I am, right now, listening to "A Darker Shade of Pagan'" podcasts which I download every week.

Overall, I'd say that I have fairly eclectic tastes in music.  (It might be easier to list what I don't like.)

Peace,
Atheris
