Won't happen.  It predates Alcoholics Anonymous and was modifed for their use.

Are you referring to the standard serenity etc prayer, or to the elements version that got mentioned in this thread?  I'm thinking the former, but wasn't sure.

Just a couple of quick notes, Steve...  First, could you please use the Quote/Reply function when replying to posts and be sure to leave the quote code in?  You can delete the text inside the quote if there's nothing specific you're replying to (or, in this case, replace it with the text of the sig you're quoting), but we really need the link back to what you're replying to that the code provides.

Second, if you see something that you're concerned might be a violation of copyright, please just click the Report to Moderator link in the lower right-hand corner of the post to let the moderators know.  Copyright violations, aside from being a legal issue in the larger sense, are also rules violations here on TC, so we'd really rather you just let the staff deal with it.  (In this case, it's my impression that the prayer is public-domain and I think that creating derivative works is a whole separate issue from using the original anyway, so I don't think there's probably a problem with it.)

Thanks.

Are you referring to the standard serenity etc prayer, or to the element version that got mentioned in this thread?  I'm thinking the former, but wasn't sure.

What is referred to and used by AA as the Serenity Prayer was modified  from this:

Full Original Serenity Prayer
by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971)

God, give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.

Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.

Amen.

This is the version used by AA

The Serenity Prayer Path

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Not owning the copyright for this AA can't sue.  And there is discussion if Niebuhr is the Origiinal writer.

I think your message got lost somewhere...  All I'm seeing are quotes from your previous message and my reply to Steve, with no new text.  Try again, maybe?  (It seems like this has happened a couple of times lately to various people--I'm wondering if we're discovering some kind of glitch in the software here.  Sad  )

*looks again*  Oh, OK, I see.  Sorry about that.  If you're going to do that, could you please put the addition on the outside of the quote box?  It makes clearer that you're adding something that way.  Wink (Sticking to just quoting the message you're modifying would probably help cut down on confusion too.)  Thanks!

I did not see anyway to do that.

To put the addition on the outside of the quote box, you mean?  Just type it after the [/quote] tag, as though replying to the post.
