Adair (boy or girl), Alexis,

Alexis as a boy's name?  I don't think I'd seen that before; I'd always seen it as a girl's name.

Depends where you come from.
See f.ex. Alexis Sorbas - that's a boy's name in that case Wink

OTOH I've never encountered a boy in Europe named 'Marion', so it's a culture-thingy Wink

I was surprised to when I found out it could be a boy's name (specifically I found out because one of the actors on Angel has that name).  It's used more for girls so I think of it more as a feminine name.

Neither have I Wink

On a side note, John Wayne's real first name was Marion.

I probably just think of it as a boy's name because the first time I ran across it, it was used for a boy (Alexis Romanov). (And my opinion of that name for a girl has been warped because the only girl I've ever met by that name was a snooty little brat, lol.)

Depends on what one is used to.
Both is possible.

Oh forgot to add: in very, very, very catholic areas boy can sometimes end up with the middle name 'Maria'. Like the actor Klaus Maria Brandauer? But that's the only case I know of.
The officials are very strict about clarity about the childs sex in connection with the name over here.

The first female Alexis I heard of, was in 'Dynasty'  Grin She was not very nice either. *grins*

as I understand it, it's basically saying that you'd like the person to be honored dead, yes?

Sort of.  More like their memory is kept alive and (to quote the common tombstone inscription) "may their soul be bound up bonds of the living".

A name site I love: www.behindthename.com I go here when I'm having trouble finding a name for a character I'm writing.

Ditto! Pretty much all my characters' names were found on there. Meanings are very important to me when it comes to names.

I'm the same way for the characters in my longer fiction.  For short stories I normally pick the first name that pops in my head.

ETA:

Unless I think that a character in a short story may appear in one of my longer works or conversely if an established character from one of my longer works appears in a short story.

I can't seem to write short stories. All of my plots have to be epicly complicated... and terribly cliche Tongue. One or two of my characters pop into my head with a name, but it's unusual.

Ha! I knew that Wink
And I've read about Marion Zimmer Bradley that she always had to explain that she is not a man. *g*

It's all in the spelling. "Marion" with an O is masculine. "Marian" with an A is feminine. I had a cousin Marion who apparently had no problems--but when I found out about the spelling thing, I had to ask Mom why Marion's mother named her after John Wayne...

Well, Marion is only a girl's name over here. Has some roots with the name Mary I guess.
Quite common. And it's pronounced Mahri-on (with the -on like in the word 'son').

It's funny to see it as a boy's name *g*

Boy: Brody

Either: Emory or Avery

You can always use a last name for a first name. It's pretty common around here.
