Let me just say that I'm not surprised when your preferred method of sex education is abstinence only, and you arrest people involved in needle swap programs. Oh no. I'm not at ALL surprised.

Report warns of AIDS ‘crisis’ across South
Half of deaths occur in 17-state region as federal, private money dries up

AIDS specialists are calling for a fundamental rethinking of HIV policy after a new report showed that infection with the virus was rising dramatically in the South even as it dropped everywhere else in the country.

Combine that with the "AIDS is God's way of punishing sinners" attitude that still persist in some areas and I'm not surprised either Angry

And finally couple that with the fact that we've got one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in America down here, and there really is no way anyone could be surprised.  What grates me so much is that these right-wing "saints" believe that real sex education will lead to greater promiscuity...all I have to say is, "Greater than what?"  Teens in the South are just as promiscuous as teens everywhere else, but they run MUCH higher risks because of the lack of sex education.

The disconnect the folks who promote no sex ed (or abstinence-only sex ed) have between how they imagine reality works and how reality always has worked is amazing. They are constantly surprised by the teen pregnancy rates and are sure more abstinence-only sex ed will lower the numbers.

But but don't you know? Only the queers get the AIDS, it doesn't happen to straight god fearing white folks, or to any other race or nationality. In fact it's only the gay agenda lieing to us that Africa is pretty much dieing by the thousands of AIDs, nope it's just gays.

Ya, I'm gonna be serious now, honestly, I would wonder how these people can deny reality so much, but I live with someone like that...so I see how easy it is when you live in your own fantasy world with little intersection in the real world.

Wow, I couldn't pull off that level of sarcasm.  Kudos.

Well, don't forget that there are also the fundie conservatives who say that Africa is dying by the thousands of AIDs because they're all perverted freaks, too.

Seriously, though, I don't know how much more it's going to take before these jokers realize that, even though SOME kids have the willpower (and desire) to practice abstinence, they till need to know how to be safe once they quit abstaining!

Psh, most teenagers are gonna slip up and do it once. But the way a lot of these sex education things teach is basically how the Family Guy Episode portrayed it "Your penis will fall off into an alternate dimension where dogs will eat it" or something roughly similar. So the teens go "Hey that didn't happen" they start doing it more and have no clue about protection.

Or if they have some clue they have a twisted view of it from commercials, I know one girl who thinks the pill is like 99.9% effective (from what I understand it's not)

I've had a lot of practice, as in a lot. Wanna make a fundie angry just start using sarcasm on them, and satire. Drives them crazy with rage, quite funny really.

Hell, my wife came OFF the pill because of the havoc it was wreaking on her.  We'll make do with rubbers and (if needed in case of malfunction) the morning-after pill, and we're mature enough to accept the consequences if, by some freak accident, both methods fail.  Honestly, though, even if the pill WERE 99.9% effective, it's not going to do squat to prevent the transmission of disease.

I know that some fundies think these kids deserve what they get if they screw around before getting married, but it just makes me sick that *SOME OF* these people can preach so much about love and then come off so hateful.

Paraphrasing Penn and Teller, species Homo has survived for 2 million years precisely because we've evolved to eat and screw everything in sight. It's a bit 'diffuckult' for us to override this basic hard-wired programming.

'Purity' rings and stern warnings just don't cut it. I'm not surprised to see this sad news.

It's my understanding that it is, actually, when used correctly.  Figures from the FDA that give a 0.1% failure rate (again, for perfect use; 5% for typical use):
http://www.fda.gov/Fdac/features/1997/conceptbl.html

Those are from 1997, so they're a few years old, so I suppose it's possible contradicting info has come up in the meantime and I just haven't heard about it.  99.9% was always the number I heard, though--not from the commercials, but from sources like the sex ed classes that are being praised in this thread.  Even if it isn't correct, I don't think believing the 99.9% number is due to "a twisted view of it from commercials".

AIDS specialists are calling for a fundamental rethinking of HIV policy after a new report showed that infection with the virus was rising dramatically in the South even as it dropped everywhere else in the country.

I almost feel like I'm blaming the victim here, but before my comments make me seem completely anti-southern-school-system, I must say this: I had NO sex education as a teenager (home-schooled by very fundie parents).  My knowledge of how sex even worked came from sneaking onto the Internet to look at pornography, and I certainly didn't research safe sex.

Despite that, I STILL knew to use a condom or at the very least pull out to avoid pregnancy.  I STILL knew it was a really bad idea to just go around having unprotected sex (and that it could occasionally be risky to just have indiscriminate protected sex).  This wasn't a hard concept for me to grasp.

I read somewhere (and it's been at least a year ago, so I can't remember the source) that some kids take the stupid chances they do because they haven't learned to be afraid of the odds yet.  The article was apparently trying to disprove the theory that kids simply aren't aware of the risks.  It argued instead that, unlike a mature adult, a teenager could see an 80% risk of infection and think to themselves that there was a 20% chance of NOT getting infected...as long as that chance was greater than 5 or 10%, this writer argued, the teenage mind could justify the massive risk on the other end of the spectrum.

I have no idea how true that is, and it certainly wasn't true for me...I ALWAYS weighed the risks, and if it looked worse than 50/50 (and usually even if the odds were, say, 60% in my favor), I wasn't willing to do it.  I wasn't a risk-taker.  Granted, I knew (and know) some kids who ARE risk-takers, so I can see how, given the right group, an article like I mentioned could be written.

The South needs better education, but a lot of kids honestly need to learn not to take stupid risks, too.

That's true - but there's also a LOT of bullshit floating about on how to "prevent pregnancy".  My personal favorite - jumping up and down after sex shakes out the sperm.

If you don't have anyone giving the kids REAL information, people are going to believe this shit!  Not everyone, sure, but .. some will.  and they WILL think they're protected because they're jumping about post-coitus!
