See, I actually like the operatic metal sound, but you might want to check out some of the songs on Nightwish's latest album.  Their diva apparently became too much of a diva, so they fired her, and the new singer brings a completely different vocal style to the mix.

Hmmm... I loved the instrumentals on Over the Hills and Far Away (I hadn't heard it before) but wasn't a great fan of the vocal sound... I'll try some of their other stuff!

Apprently she was spending too much time with her newly-wed husband and not dedicating enough time to the band. That's what I read on their website when it happened, anyway.

I really like Nightwish. As you say, Over the Hills and Far Away is fantastic, instrumentally speaking. I do much prefer Amy Lee's voice. I really like Within Temptation, too. Not only is the music great, but their lyrics are very thought-provoking.

These three bands are my favourite. Evanescence, then Within Temptation, and then Nightwish.

We Didn't Start the Fire (Billy Joel)

I remember roller-skating to this song at the rink in middle school.  Cheesy  Do they even have roller rinks anymore?

We've still got one in my town!  Haven't been in forever, but to the best of my knowledge it's still there.

Same with the area I grew up in.  Although, I think it's mainly middle school and below aged kids that go there.

Is that really why?  Seems like a lame reason to me.  I haven't heard their new vocalist, but I love them.  I have to give their new stuff a listen.  And I've never heard of Within Temptation, but now must check them out.  Thanks!

In the same operatic metal vein is "Leaves' Eyes" who are awesome, for those of you who aren't familiar with them.

What is your favorite song from some of your favorite music artists?

It is really hard to pick just one per band/artist, so I'll do "of the moment."

"Face to Face" by Siouxsie & the Banshees

"The Trick is to Keep Breathing" by Garbage

"Slackerbitch" by Placebo

"Isabella" by Mediaevel Baebes

"A Sorta Fairytale" by Tori Amos

"Razor Sharp" by Collide

"Everdream" by Nightwish

Sometimes I think I must be the only person in the world who likes Evanescence but can't stand Nightwish; I've heard that comparison made many times, it seems like, and I tend to disagree with it.  What I've heard of Nightwish, at least, has not appealed to me at all; the over-the-top operatic vocals tend to grate on me in a manner reminiscent of fingernails on chalkboard.  Having heard both, I do much prefer Evanescence.

There are at least 2 of us Wink.  Evanescence is one of my favorite bands; Nightwish just annoys me.

I will add, though, that the closest I've ever come to seeing Evanescence live was watching the live DVD they put out a while back, which was so poorly produced that it was difficult to form an opinion of them as live performers from it.  So I've only got the studio recordings to go on here.

I saw them live  March 2007, and I thought they had a great show.

I found videos of a live performance they did in Tokyo that sounds somewhat decent (or at least better than they did in Anywhere But Home).  However, I'm not sure if Amy's lip-synching or not on some of these Undecided

P.S., whether or not she's a good singer, she does put on one hell of a show.

I think that's my problem...as a musician myself, I tend to get really pissy when musicians put more emphasis on "putting on a good show" than on playing/singing well.  I would much rather see them stand in one place and actually do a good rendition of their music than see them run around the stage dancing, using up all their breath, until they're just wheezing out the notes.  And if they have to rely on lip-syncing, so much the worse.

They sound fine in the studio, but after seeing some of their concert footage, I don't know how much of their studio work is actually their own talent and how much is effects-laden "cleanup" from their producer (which, naturally, makes me suspect lip-syncing, even if Amy Lee really has worked on improving her pipes since Anywhere But Home).

That's just me, though Cheesy
