I suppose that the greatest difficulty in finding a "positive" definition for the word pagan is that the word itself is thought to have originated as a slur.

Actually...  I don't think that's the kind of positive/negative divide that was being addressed in what you quoted.  I think it was defining a group by what they are (positive) as opposed to what they are not (negative), not whether they're good or bad.
