After 10 years of hard service, Bob's server is dying. We are going to be moving the board to a Linode Virtual Private Server. The current cost estimate is $60 a month that will have to be covered by donations. (It could be more if we need a larger VPS, but this one will hopefully work for us.)  We have enough donations and pledge from staff and regulars to cover the first few months, but we will be taking monthly donations as we'd rather have a cushion than suddenly run out of money and lose the server.

The move isn't scheduled as we have to set up the server and move everything (and then test it) -- and do all this in our spare time. We now have current database backups from early this afternoon so we shouldn't lose any stuff posted after that even if the board suddenly dies again.

We thank everyone for putting up wityh the board's troubles the past few months. The new server is not the super-server Bob's was so it may be a bit slower, but hopefully not much.  And we may be able to tweak it as time goes on.

I'd like to thank those who donated last night and today. You made getting the server quickly possible. I signed up for it last night and had it before I went to bed. Linode seems to be living up to their extremely high reputation.

That is good news.  What is the best way to make a donation?

Paypal.  We will have a monthly donation meter and such so people can see where we are each month.  If you want to donate to the "cushion fund" we are using now: Donate via PayPal.

Thank you!  Every little bit helps.  Remember, once we start collecting by the month, just 7 people donating $10 each with give us $60+ every after the paypal fees that get deducted from each donation.  While paying for a year is way too much to ask from any one person, 84 people giving $10 once a year (7 people a month) would cover it at our current cost level.

How do you track who has donated?  There was no message box to put in my username or anything.

Not that it's a big deal.  I'm not expecting a cookie or anything.   Cheesy

He's going to set up a tracking thing on the new board. I asked him about that. Smiley

We can't at the moment unless we know the email address as there is no way to put a box for donor input in the form without exposing the paypal email address to spammers. When Paypal changed their encrypted form method they dropped the ability to have input boxes in it. And without the encrypted form you get hundreds of spam emails a day to the paypal address.

The system I hope to use on the new server while have you logged in to the board when you pay and will be able to get info in real time from Paypal which means it will know who paid what -- although donors can elect to be anonymous if they wish.

Yikes!  I'm thankful for the encrypted version.

Yes, unencypted paypal form are a gold mine for spammers. They are easy for bots to spot and the addresses are almost always good. Sad

UPDATE: 24 September 2008

I have a test version of this board up on the new server with a copy of the database from yesterday afternoon. It is working. Flashchat even works.

Email on the new server has not been set up as far as I can tell. That's the next major thing that needs to be done.

Things are moving along, if slowly.

We are going to be moving the board to a Linode Virtual Private Server.

Do you move the whole board to the new server? Including memberships? Or do we have to become members again?
Will the forum web address change?

(Please forgive me if these are stupid questions, my knowledge is very limited.)

This is great news!

Sorry I couldn't help out with the $$$ this time.  Once I'm employed again, I'll be happy to make semi-regular donations.

Barring major disasters, the board will move as it is, including memberships. The address will stay the same.

Money will be needed every month so there will be plenty of chances to donate if you are willing and able to.
