I was wondering if someone could help me to better understand the Lunar Calendar.

I've been going about taking steps to become a Polytheistic Hellenist and the process has been extremely difficult. Once I found this forum, though, things got a lot easier as there are so many links to helpful places.

One thing I need a bit more help with, however, is the Lunar Calendar so that I can celebrate festivals accordingly.

I was also wondering if Hellenismos was practiced in any sort of cirlce, as I think I'd like to join one (if there are any in my area).

Thanks in advance for any and all help.  (:

Welcome to the Cauldron and Ta Hiera!

Could you elaborate on your question a little more?  Like, is there something in particular that's confusing you about the lunar calendar?  (It's much easier, and more useful to you, for us to answer specific questions than something as broad and general as "help me understand the lunar calendar".  Wink  )

Welcome to TC!  What are you having trouble understanding?

Some of the Hellenic religious organizations have local groups, but due to the relatively small number of Hellenic pagans, there probably aren't any where you are. Fortunately, a lot of the practices were done at the family level -- even they the city-wide festivals get most of the attention.

Should this be "even though" rather than "even they"?

I'm not really sure exactly. I guess I just don't understand how to use it to calculate the Athenian calendar?  Huh

Ugh, I feel dumb. I've honestly never even heard of the Lunar Calendar until a couple of days ago.

I found this site (http://www.numachi.com/~ccount/hmepa/About.html ) and it just made me more confused.

Thank you all for the warm welcomes though.

You shouldn't need to do much calculation; the Athenian calendar was a lunar calendar, so there's not, like, any conversion or anything that you have to do.  New moon to new moon is one month; that's it.

Don't confuse "uninformed" with "dumb".  Smiley  You're asking, you're trying to fill in the gaps in your knowledge.  That's not dumb at all, and hopefully will quickly lead you out of being even "uninformed".

I can see why.  Yikes.  That does look pretty intimidating.

I no longer try to follow the lunar calendar, myself.  (Disclaimer:  I don't really consider myself reconstructionist either, though historical accuracy and scholarship are important to me.)  I finally made the decision that it made more sense to me, personally, to follow the civic calendar local to the time and place I'm living in--that is, the US in 2008, so the Julian calendar.  When I was trying to follow the lunar calendar, though, I looked at the calendar they've got posted elsewhere on that site, just used the dates they gave, and figured days going from sundown to sundown local time.  I didn't do any calculations of my own; I figured other people had already done it, and there was no need for me to reinvent the wheel.

Here's where we're currently at on that calendar:
http://www.numachi.com/~ccount/hmepa/calendars/696.4.Puanepsion.html

Did that help at all, or have I just confused you?

I think that actually helped a lot.

If I understand correctly, today until sundown would be that first pink box right? For Apollon and Puanepsia?

This would all be so much less complicated if I had a mentor to take my questions to but, there doesn't seem to be ANY kind of pagan community around where I live.

Hooray for the internet!
