Would the tax loss help you out? I tend to weigh selling at a loss against a) whether the tax loss will provide a benefit and/or b) whether I'm cutting my losses or (as Sasha said) locking in my losses.

That's part of the issue.  This is mostly for a regular investment account, not an IRA or 401k.

The tax loss would help only to a deduction of $3,000 with rest carrying over.  Although last year I had a moderately nasty tax surprise, with large cap gain payouts on mutual funds, so a loss now would counter that at the end of the year IF there is a cap gains / dividend payout.

While I'd be locking in my losses, it would raise cash to buy stuff that's a lot more conservative or likely to recover faster.

As for the 401K and divorce, I might have to stop putting money in to pay for her bingo habit, etc.
