If Wikipeda can be trusted, it is more or less the same as psychometry (gaining knowledge through touching an object).

ETA: Although, if you ask me, it would be like clairvoyance and clairaudience except you feel things instead of seeing/hearing.  Like a psychic who can sense the physical pain of someone who died of a gunshot wound.

Hmm, ok. Thanks for the link  Smiley

So is it like an extremely heightened form of empathy?

Possibly, but I'm not sure about the emotional end of it.

I think it might be more than that.  You might get a feeling about something without actually feeling like it was happening to you.  For example, you walk into a room and get 'a negative energy feeling'.  Or feeling spirits might also qualify as clairsentience.  But I'm no expert.   Undecided

The second part of what you said is more accurate. I've never heard of psychometry referred to as clairsentience... It's clair-something else (all my books are packed away so I can't look it up).

It means "clear knowing" and is similair to clairvoyance and clairaudience, except that it arrives as a thought, not necessarily accompanied by a "sight" or "sound". Just an accurate thought that pops into your head that you shouldn't be able to know.

Claircognizance?

I may be wrong, (it happens sometimes) But from everything I've read on the subject has indicated that the terms are synonymous.

Like clairalience and clairolfactory.

I always thought that clairscentience were those who can psychicly  smell things. For instance my psychic gift is my sense of smell. whenever someone lies to me and is full of bull I can literally smell poop which no one else can smell but me,I sometimes will actually gag.I also can smell a smell on some women when they are extremely nervous, they don't appear to be nervous. Whenever I am driving if I get near a graveyard or am near a hearse I will smell a hard to explain smell.(I smell dead people). After my father passed away if something was wrong with the car, even a flat tire I would smell his special smell.Sometimes I will smell that "dead" smell and I can only think that someone has died there.

Look at the etymology of the word:

Quote from: Wikipedia article mentioned upthread
The word is from the French clair, “clear,” + sentience, “feeling,” and is ultimately derived from the Latin clarus, “clear,” + sentiens, derived from sentire, “to feel”.

I think that what you described (the smelling) is called clairalience.

That's interesting,I call it a gift because I do not need any "props" to encourage it.

It's very interesting that you just said that. The reason I asked about clairsentience was because for years I have constantly found myself walking into a room and immediately sensing either negativity/sadness/anger etc. I always thought it was just paranoia on my part, until someone who has recently been around me doing this mentioned the word clairsentience to me. I'd never heard of it until then.

I've also heard it applied to feeling the presence of ghosts/spirits.

this is sort of how it works for me. I am actually a poor empath-I don't pick up other people's feelings very well, psychically (or in other ways, sometimes, I'm afraid). But I am a pretty good energy detector. I also have physical sensations related to psychism. I sometimes smell, taste or just feel in or around my body, a person or entity or energy pattern, whatever it may be. I will sometimes get a thought from nowhere, but I always thought this was more in line with clairaudience.

That sounds more like empathy to me.  I'm an empath and get the same type of impressions.

I also smell whem a spirit is in the room - usually a smell distinctive to the person who's passed.  My father is pipe smoke, aunt is a floral perfume, G-pa is cigarrette smoke, etc.  I forget who told me this was clairsentience.  I also feel textures, etc.
