First Pictures Taken of Extrasolar Planets

"In what might amount to an early Christmas present to the universe, two groups of astronomers have taken the first pictures of what they say — and other astronomers agree — are probably planets going around other stars."

What really excites me is that our growing 'Encyclopedia Galactica' (to borrow Carl Sagan's phrase) is allowing us to put our own star system (Sol) into its proper context.

Ohh, sweetness!  I've been waiting years to see this...not quite as high-res as I'd been picturing in my head, but still about what I realistically expected.

"Is no one inspired by our present picture of the universe? Our poets do not write about it; our artists do not try to portray this remarkable thing. It's probably not so much that there are planets than that there is a possibility of LIFE on other planets.

Astronomers debunked the way the Bible describes the universe (geocentric with the sun revolving around the Earth) centuries ago so I don't think that's much of a problem for today's fundie.

There used to be a weird web site by a (apparently fundie) Christian demonstrating that science was a lie and the Earth WAS the center of both the solar system and the universe just as the Bible said. I haven't been able to find it in years, unfortunately, as it was good for a laugh.

Yea... I really don't get it, but to each his own...

The way I always looked at it... Didn't the JCI-God create science if he started the universe, according to their beliefs God created everything... therefore he must've created science and the ability to learn...

But didn't he also didn't want Adam and Eve to eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil?  Don't know if that applies, just throwing it out there.

True... but they did, didn't they? Therefore He created it, they just gained access to it, IMHO.

We've already got a thread on this, actually...  This is a different news story on the same subject, though, so I'm going to merge the two threads to keep all the discussion of the topic in one place.  Smiley
