This makes me sad. I recently read a book called 'From Baghdad, With Love' by Lieutenant Colonel Jay Kopelman, and it's the story of a puppy he found and fell in love with when serving in Iraq. He went through hell and back to get Lava, the puppy, the necessary credentials to be able to go to the US. He was breaking military law by keeping the dog, but he did it nonetheless. It was a wonderful story, and it really gave the impression that even amoungst all the shit of warfare something good can still happen. It was also very telling at how the soldiers took to the dog. They seemed to depend on him just as much as he depended on them.

There were packs of wild dogs when I was there.  There is something in Arabic or Islamic culture that considers dogs to be unclean, so they are not generally kept as pets.  Running wild, they do what dogs will do.

At our housing, there was a feral bitch we named "Trouble" who mugged us for food all day.  She was delightful and fun to have around, but vector control took her away because we didn't know what she had been in contact with.

It's sad to see it come to this, but I understand the necessity.  When working at the veterinary hospital, I saw upwards of a dozen strays euthanized any given week, and that was a small town where pets could be neutered.

Yep. Which is really sad. Some of the world's most wonderful and ancient breeds got their start in the Middle Eastern countries. I know Treekisser and I had a discussion one time about the saluki and how that worked with the Islamic tenets.

Real shame.

If a culture doesn't respect human rights you can't expect much in the way of animal rights either.

Ah...that's a bit broad. It's really a religious issue and has nothing to do with human rights as we define them today.

I don't think there is much evidence that the two are strongly connected. Dogs are pets in most of the western world, in other parts of the world they are a food animal. Some of the places where they are a food animal have good human rights records. Some of the places where they are a pet don't.

How did it?

Muhammad pretty much declared them unclean and that was that.

Which has always confused me slightly, as Muhammad loved cats.

Here's a site on it, though I have no idea how accurate the interpretations are.

Thankyou for the link. I haven't read all of it yet, but I scanned it to see if this was included and I don't think it is:

This is from the Hadith: The Prophet narrated, "A prostitute was forgiven because she passed by a dog panting at a well, and, observing that thirst was about to kill the dog, she removed her slipper, fastened it to her veil, and drew out some water for the dog. And for this she was forgiven."

I've heard this snippet before, but just of now I got it from this site:

http://www.geocities.com/jrhalver/teach.html

I was really confused the first time I heard this (and still am).

I will note that this is a Christian site that seem to be devoted to converting Muslims.  I'd be skeptical of some of its interpretations.

Yeah. I hoped that at least the quotes taken directly from the Koran or anecdotes would be OK.
