I'm going to wait until the new administration takes over the reins and post the new categories in March. January and February will remain the same.

These are the old categories:

Weird Stuff/Humor
Church/State Issues
Terrorism News
Non-US Political News
US Political News
Iraq/Afghanistan News
Environment
Education
Economy
Consumer News
Civil Liberties/Gay Rights

And here are the categories I've come up with. I've combined some and dropped one.

Weird Stuff/Humor
Church/State Issues
Iraq/Afghanistan/Terrorism News
Political News
Environment
Economy/Consumer News
Civil Liberties/Gay Rights

This takes us from 11 to 7 categories. Depending on how things go, I may end up combining Church/State and the Civil Liberties/Gay Rights categories, but that would be much later in the year.

Anyone have any comments or thoughts on this?

Seems like a good list to me.  It makes sense to combine the Iraq/Afghanistan news with the Terrorism as most of the time they seem to be somewhat related.

Combining Civil Liberties/Gay Rights and Church/State might not work as well.  While the anti-gay rights people are normally a fundie of some stripe, a good deal of civil liberties violations do not involve religion (free speech violations, prisoner abuse, warrantless wire-taps, etc).  Hopefully some of this may change with the next administration but it wouldn't be overnight.

Yeah. I debated making that combination but decided against it. I'm hopeful that even some of these remaining categories can be deleted after awhile. Frankly I'm burned out. I've posted news for nearly 8 years, so I've had scandal fatigue for a good three years. I'll be glad to move on.

I saw the thread title and thought, "I wonder if January is a bit soon?" (after eight years of end runs around the system, I can't relax until Obama is inaugurated) so I applaud your choice of March - wait to see a bit of how this gov't works in practice.

I'm not sure about dropping Education, but - IIRC without checking - a substantial number of the convos in that topic were related to church/state separation or other civil liberties issues, so it may indeed make sense to eliminate it as a category.

That was what I thought too when I started looking at it this morning. I'm sure there was something other than evolution and religion that have been talked about, but since the anti-evo people seem to be religion nuts who want to start down the church/state road, I figure stories can go in there.

Of course like with anything, if it's warrants it, it can always have its very own thread.
