Hey folks,

I was hoping you could spare some prayers/good thoughts for some friends of ours.  Last fall, their home was flooded and they could not afford to make repairs.  The floor is rotting out and the insulation is shot.  So, they had been staying in the back rooms of their shops (a computer fix-it shop and a florist in the same building) while saving up the money to fix the house.  The shop had an electrical fire and was declared a total loss.  They were able to make it out, but the guy had carbon monoxide poisoning and they lost their dog, cat, and bird (and bird's eggs).  The shop is a rental, so even if their merchandise is insured, they don't have any insurance money to pay for living quarters.

They have four kids living with them, and their extended family is not offering much support.  Currently, they are staying in a cabin someone lent them until the new tenant moves in.  We are trying to help them find a more permanent place (including offering our place for a while) and replace their lost things.  But with the economy as it stands, we aren't able to do much beyond supporting ourselves right now.  Any good thoughts or suggestions for their situation are appreciated.

Wow, that's rough trade. Sending good thoughts their way for sure.

Does the county have any kind of assistance for folks in their situation? Perhaps not a permanent solution, but something better than "until we have to let someone else move in"?

I will research for something; I suspect not.  A lot of rural Missouri has nothing in the way of assistance.  Unfortunately, they live a few counties south of mine, so I'm not sure what if any social services are available.

Sadly, probably not. Missouri, like Texas and many states in this area of the country, doesn't provide much in the way of public assistance. Everyone is on their own.
