I'd like to know which methods you prefer and why. Would the first method be an incomplete circle or do you think it's necessary to leave it open to the ground and sky for grounding and connection?  Huh

I don't cast circles very often, but when I do, it's a closed sphere similar to what FierFlye described above.  The size depends on the work I'm doing and if there's anyone else involved, but the spheres always extend into the ground below and air overhead.  Staying grounded while using this method has never been an issue for me, but then again, grounding comes relatively easy for me. YMMV.
