I'd like to know which methods you prefer and why. Would the first method be an incomplete circle or do you think it's necessary to leave it open to the ground and sky for grounding and connection?  Huh

Fully closed, because the circle is supposed to be a container, and containers work really poorly if they're open on both ends, in my opinion. Also, while grounding is important, during much of our ritual work, we actually *want* to be somewhat disconnected from the earthy/mundane/physical form stuff.

We work with a grounded connection through the altar (this is part of why I talk about viewing the altar as a tool in itself), in case of need (someone goes off during a meditation and has trouble coming back, for example), but most of the ritual energy isn't fully grounded out until it's sent out into the world at the opening of the circle. Until then, it resonates within the circle, affecting first the non-physical world, and then echoing back to the physical (one hopes.)

All of this said, we don't do a perfect globe: depending on the physical needs, we cast to the edges of the room, or the entire house. In this model, the bottom of the circle is the floor, the top is the ceiling, and the walls or archways form the sides. (In other words, it's a symbolic circle, transposed onto a physical rectangle) Entire house is handy for longer rituals like Sabbats, where people may want to get a drink, go to the bathroom, etc. Smaller is better for a tighter energetic focus and better control over the energy of the circle (like an initiation or major working.)
