Hello all,

I am currently looking for some sort of software (if it exists) that would be a kind of virtual candle I could light on my computer desktop.  I am currently at college and we cannot have candles or anything else in the room because of fire hazards.  If someone could help me out I would really appreciate it, and I hope this is the right area for this topic.  Thanks in advance,

I'm not sure about software, but there are several websites that have virtual candles which you can light (some with a choice of candle colors).  Doing a web search under "virtual candle" should list several.

Alternately, you could use a flameless (LED) candle.  They've become pretty widely available over the past couple of years.  You may have already considered and rejected this (some of the more inexpensive ones might not be as realistic as you'd like), but I mention it just in case you didn't know about them.

Wow that's kind of sad.  Have you ever considered requesting permission for spiritual/religious reasons.  In my own opinion I would just break the rule.  Wink

Anyways, here are a couple places...

There is a page one can create a virtual shrine.

Perhaps the OP isn't willing to lose their living space for the sake of a real candle, or isn't willing to subject room- and dorm- mates to the fire risk while in residence.  I know I wasn't.

I live in a dorm where I'm not allowed candles, but I'll admit I've broken some rules on that.  Although it was really scary once, because the first time I lit a candle, I finished after a few minutes and snuffed it out, aand had just finished putting it all away, when there's a knock on my door.  It's security, and they say that they're here because someone's burning a candle, and they need to find out who.  They took a glance around my room and left, but it was rather a close call.

The rules are there for a reason. Fires in dorms -- like fires in hotels -- are dangerous. You really think you have the right to put everyone else in the building at risk so you can light a candle? Sorry, but I don't think you do.

I understand the reasoning behind the rules, but I will just say that I do take precautions to ensure that no harm will come of it.  The candle stays in the holder, away from anything flammable, and always within my sight and within reach for the duration of time I allow it to burn.  I keep water close at hand as well, for extra safety.  Believe me, I don't take it lightly.

Thank you!  The second site is very nice, I will probably use it often.

This is also something I will most likely use.

Thank you so much for your help everyone!

Don't you just hate it when people get so serious about fire safety?

So if you give someone online a harshly-worded fire safety lecture, are you flaming them???  Grin

It depends how you give the lecture.  They do say these things should be interactive.
