This is something that I've seen touched upon in many threads before, but I wanted to ask it as a direct question:

Do you think the Gods would still exist if humans didn't?

Do you think the Gods would still exist if humans didn't?

This is probably something that would depend upon belief system.  If someone believes that gods are something like thought-forms or need our energy to survive, then no.

I, however, think they would exist without us.

I just now realized I messed up the subject title. That's supposed to be 'Would' not 'What'... Embarrassed

I tend to think so, too. Which of course tells me that they don't need us- so I wonder why They interact with us? For solely our benefit?

I imagine it's more out of boredom.  I mean, after a few centuries you start to run out of things to do.

I think at that point you start getting into definitions of "exist" ...

I think the Divine would still be there.  I think the gods-as-gods - as they are now - would not.

They exist without them, but we give them form and shape.  Without our reaching back to them, they would not be as they are.

They might, however, be something else. Smiley

I think they would exist, but like HeartShadow said, perhaps not entirely the way they are now. They wouldn't have had humans to change things up in their lives. Just like if my brother didn't exist, I would be different than who I am today. Of course then I think they would just create us, or some form of us. Why? *shrugs* Depends on why you think the Gods created us, I suppose. Or if you think they created us at all.

Also, to the question of WHY they interact with us... I lead you to this comic. Smiley http://netjeru.comicgenesis.com/d/20070925.html

Yes, but only some of them. I believe that humans participate in some deities, which would cese to be in the absence of humans. Others are simply observed by humanity; these I believe would continue to exist, regardless of humanity's existence. YMMV.

I don't think that some of them have any choice; humans are an integral part of them and their consciousness is an emergent property of the human (and other) consciousnesses (horrible word Wink). For others, I believe we are simply a part of their environment and they deal with us as such. Sometimes by choice, sometimes of necessity. When things are done for our benefit, I suspect that it is really the deity's own ends that are being served in its mind.

That was both adorable and completely in line beliefs.

I believe the gods existed before us, and will continue to exist long after we're gone.  The "they need our worship to survive" theory never rang true to me.   It seems like hubris.

I think it is possible that some aspects of their "personalities" that we've come to know and worship might only be put on for our benefit - and could therefore be discarded when no longer useful.

Ahh!  I love this!  Moreso because I went in expecting something snarky and OhMyGods-style and was thus a bit surprised.  <3

Great topic!

I don't really know, but think they would still be there. I think they do benefit somehow from worship, but may not need it to survive. I think though, that they take specific appearances when interacting with us.

I really like the idea that they just love us or find us a nice entertainment or an interesting job. Smiley

Do you think the Gods would still exist if humans didn't?

Existing per se? Yes.

But I think without the perception filters of beings like us, that shaped the forms we call 'Zeus', 'Aset', 'Freya' and so on, they would loose those forms after a while.

I guess it wouldn't take long, a few thousand years maybe, and the things we recognize them by would've been gone.
