OLYMPIA, Wash. – The state is sending out hundreds of thousands of $1 checks to the state’s neediest residents. It’s a plan that’s supposed to bring millions of dollars worth of food stamps to the state by March.

Nelson says it just sounds like more bureaucracy.

And I've gotta say I agree with her.  How twisted is it that, in order for a state to justify actually giving people money who need it, they have to spend over $200,000 in administrative costs?  The mind boggles.

That said, I'm glad the state is doing the red-tape shuffle needed to get its neediest residents more money, but maybe their lawmakers should consider taking a long hard look at the laws that have put this ridiculous red tape in place before they have to spend anouther quarter of a million to actually help people.

All that red tape is there to help make sure people don't game the system and that people who don't need the help don't get it.

At least that is my understanding of the rules.

That said, a bank recently upped our credit card interest because the 'cost of banking has gone up."  My reponse "And the stimulus package you banks got?"  and yes it was one of the ones that got money. )my husband was handling the situation and didn't say that out loud, so we ended up with a closed card, but a lower rate, both good results.

It makes sense from the state's POV, but it shows how idiotic our welfare/assistance regulations are.
