This is a link to an article from our local paper a few months ago.  Our city and many other cities are having huge problems with bedbugs.  Entire apartment or condo complexes, single family homes, group homes, hotels, you name it, we have them everywhere at this point.

Bedbugs are gross.  Headlice are, too, and you can use many of the same methods for prevention, though you should hire a professional for bedbugs.  The little SOBs are hard to kill.  To prevent infestations, clean.  Vacuum your mattresses every time you change sheets, and make sure you're doing that weekly.  Vacuum the top, sides and if you've seen any, between the box spring and mattress, too, and the bottom of the mattress.  Get help if you have anything larger than a twin bed, so you don't injure yourself.  Environmental treatment and cleanup are really the only way to get rid of them.  A couple of them can turn into a problem in a hurry.

I've never personally dealt with them, but I've known people who have.  Hiring an experienced exterminator these days isn't easy in most places, since bedbugs were, for the most part, wiped out in most areas.  But we stopped taking care of prevention and they're coming back.  How charming.

New York City too, though happily not my place.
