What's your experience with this issue?

I've been in a couple of groups. One was purely 'professional' in the sense that we came together as a group of individuals united by a desire to perform rituals with a group. We only met up for rituals; none of us really had a relationship outside of the circle. I've always thought that the rituals we did felt a little empty as a result, because our energies weren't in sync and we didn't have anyone skilled enough to weave our energies together.

In another, I was a new member coming into an established group, which was a little awkward sinc I had to figure out where I fit in. While we still mainly met for ritual work, we spent a great deal of time before and after each ritual bonding. Our ties were a lot closer, and the rituals seemed more solid and profound as a result. However, when personal relationships started to turn sour, our ritual work became increasingly brittle and fragile.

I think having personal ties to each other makes ritual work much more satisfying and profound, but there IS the danger that, as can happen in non-religious contexts, relationships will go bad and feelings will get hurt, which can negatively impact how the group's energies flow.
