So I'm wondering at the moment if a formal hierarchy would be better than an inofficial one, because with the formal one it would be clear to everyone involved where it ends.

This is the way I work. I'd *much* rather be clear about what the structure is, because then I can clearly ask questions about it if I need to. If it's all vague and general, it's really hard to say "Hey: this part of the conversation, I felt like your peer and maybe friend - and this part over here, I felt like a student, and how did we shift from one to the other?"

I think there's lots of ways to handle it, too - I think systems in which you start as friendly peers, and then the class starts, and you shift to teacher-student can work - just that everyone's got to agree on what the change points are.
