Cool butterflies!  My reflexology instructor always goes back to Costa Rica, she loves it too.  I can see why.

Hummingbirds at the Hummingbirds Garden at the park in Monteverde:

Though it's been years, this I remember quite well! I sat for hours right in front of the hummingbird feeders, watching them land in front of my nose; in fact, a Violet Sabrewing took his turn so close that he actually whacked my face with his wings!

I'm itching to see your photos, but they're loading really slowly for some reason; I'll keep trying.

On a trail in Monteverde I also spotted a female Purple-throated Mountain Gem and followed her with my eyes back to her nest, a short ways off the trail, and made a little mental note of where it was, right down to an unusual branch to help me find it again. That night, I took the night tour of the reserve; we happened to pass the spot, I recognized the branch, and shined my flashlight on the nest. "Oh look," I said as if I'd just discovered it, "There's a female hummingbird asleep on her nest!" The guide scoffed...then saw it for himself, and regarded me with newfound ornithological awe that I could spot something that small, unmoving, in the dark.

I never 'fessed up!

Did you see bellbirds? Or most of all, quetzals? I missed both in Monteverde, to my unending torment; I was there at the wrong time of year (December).

I think the damn filter at work is blocking the files as too big or something; I'll have to try this when I get home.

I heard bellbirds on my trip.  I didn't see any.

Cormorant.  I only know because they're common in S. Florida. Smiley

I loved the butterfly gardens at Monteverde, and hiking on Arenal was one of the most surreal experiences I've had.

Wonderful pictures, wonderful place!

You're close; it's an anhinga, which is a close relative of the cormorant and shares that same wing-drying behavior. (Anhingas are in S. Florida too, BTW.)

(I finally got home to see the pics, obviously; they're fantastic!)

Beautiful!  Thank you so much for sharing.  I especially liked the bats and the alligators - I don't know why I love bats so much.
