I will say I did not see Mine that Bird coming. At all.

However, this is a wonderful way that his connections chose to honor Barbaro:

Very forward of them, and commendable.

Mine The Bird will be the talk for years.  Truly the race of a lifetime, given the odds and his performance.

If you watch the video, you can see MTB appear almost literally from nowhere to take the lead on the homestretch.  The race caller didn't even know who it was at first - last anyone saw, MTB was trailing the pack.

Toward the end of the video you get the blimp view - MTB arrived at the turn for home dead last.  Taking a 'higher gear,' he threaded the needle against the rail where I doubt I would try in a simulation.  Calvin Borel showed what kind of stuff he is made of.  In spades.

FWIW, I did some checking - Barbaro was faster in all but the third 1/4 mile. Wink

Calvin rode Rachel Alexandra in her 20-length win Friday - the Kentucky Oaks.  Two grade one stakes in as many days, both nationally televised.

Now we know why Rachel wasn't entered in the Derby, and won't be entered in the Preakness.

Mr. Borel is very canny. Cool  I would imagine his hall of fame entry is pretty much assured.

"I've seen knights in armor panic at the first hint of battle.  And I've seen the lowliest unarmed squire pull a spear from his own body to defend a dying horse." - Kevin Costner as Robin of Loxley, Robin Hood; Prince of Thieves.
