Hey folks!

My husband work with the Egyptian Gods. I was wondering if anyone had some good recommendations for Egyptian Mythology books I might buy him for his birthday next month. Primary sources are best (we have a copy of the Book of the Dead), but good scholarly secondary sources are OK too.

Thanks!!

A very good, but expensive, book is Richard H. Wilkinson's The Complete Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt.  The author is Professor/Director of Arizona University Egyptian Expedition, and the book is not merely a collection of myths, but a study of thier historical development, nature of the divine, worship in ancient Egypt, the relationship of the gods/goddesses to earthly dynasties, and so on.  There is also a very thorough section on the deities themselves, containing such things as attributes, symbology, major cults, etc.

I've had this book since its publication in 2003, and refer to it continually.

I second Wilkinson's book.

George Hart has his Dictionary of Gods and Goddesses and Geraldine Pinch has her Egyptian Myths: A Guide to the Gods, Goddesses and Traditions of ancient Egypt (as good as Wilkinson's book is with the dictionary entries, this one is as good with the myth parts so these two books, in my opinion complement each other).

Something you may want to keep in mind is that we have very few "Egyptian myths".  We don't have the sorts of story-cycles that the Greeks left, the detailed descriptions of the comings and goings of the gods and so on.

A lot of what we know is pieced together from references on ruins, passing allusions in other stories, things cobbled together by Greek scholars (which adds layers of weird interpretation at times), and so on, so you're not likely to find a book of mythology per se.  You can find things like the books mentioned, which assemble the scraps we have into piles, and a few books that have extrapolated stuff, but ...

... if you've read the Book of Going Forth By Day, you'll see a lot of *references* to myths, but not so much the stories themselves, y'know?
