Gosh! Aren't there any weapon controlls? In Berlin you have to pass through metal detectors to enter the Jewish museum.

He reportedly opened fire before he got to the metal detectors.

Those people confuse me.  A Muslim straps on a bomb and blows up a Jewish Temple or rival mosque and he/she's a terrorist.  But a Christian bombs an abortion clinic and it isn't?  Come on.  You can't expect me to believe the only difference between the two is that the first one is a member of a 'bad' religion.

The Muslim bombing of a Jewish site or rival Muslim site or Christian bombing of an abortion clinic are both terrorism.  Both have an aim of changing things beyond just killing people.

Depending upon how one defines terrorism, the Holocaust Museum shooting is probably not terrorism.  It's a hate crime instead.

The only way in which "hate crime" makes sense to me as a category is as a terrorist act.  The entire concept of "hate crime" is based around the notion that some crimes are perpetrated in such a way as to imply the possibility of further violence directed at people like the victim -- thus, an act designed to create fear -- thus, terrorism.

how does one label a lone palestinian gunman who somehow makes it through all the checkpoints and almost makes it too shoot up a cafe, but end up only getting one policeman.  If that is terrorism, then this is too.  If it is not, then this is not.

Organized motive.

The lone palestinian gunman, or lone abortion bomber, want to effect political change by killing people.

The guy at the museum just hates Jews (among others) and wanted to kill them, or those who were going to learn about them.  He wasn't trying to change anything other than kill Jews, or supporters of Jews.

The man has been crazy for years. Turns out one of my friends from temple grew up near the guy.

Hmm.  I guess it is possible he spent his childhood elsewhere, but he graduated from Clayton-Ladue highschool and Wash U here in Saint Louis.  (Which makes his reactions to Jews doubly odd).
