I've made a number of dedicated jewellry pieces, some of which could be described as 'prayer beads'. I usually make them to go along with a set prayer or prayers, with the numbers of beads (or type of beads) having specific significance. I have a pic of one here:

That's beautiful, Caroline.

What kinds of beads are they, and do the different colors have significance?

That's beautiful! I'll echo Moon Ivy's questions and ask what kinds of beads are they? (And I'm always interested in significance!)

Thanks! I was very happy with how it turned out.

It's an elemental piece (more of a meditation aid, really). The colour/bead correspondances are:

fire - red jade
air - carnelian
water - blue onyx
earth - jade
spirit - amethyst

There's a full cycle of 3X3 for each element, and a final triple for each before the pentacle finiel. (The other beads are sterling and it's strung on wire for strength.)

That's your site?  I don't recall you mentioning it before.  Nice work.  (Bookmark Junkie Behavior #3:  habitually backspaces in URL box to see if there's more good stuff than just the one page.)

This thread has been giving me the "hmmms"; the pic you linked to clicked with that somehow.  I don't yet know what's going to develop from it (maybe nothing beyond having explored certain thoughts), but something's going on in the back of my brain.

Do you get your beads online?  Or do you shop locally?

Thank you! Though I just did the jewellery; a talented friend (paintedred.com) did the graphic and web work.

I mostly do local shows - I have ordered stuff both online and from catalogues before, but I'm a pretty visual/tactile person. I prefer to be able to have a close look at what I'm buying, talk to folks about their sourcing, and be able to actually feel it.

Hurray for inspiration!

As I said above, I'm working on Brighid prayer beads.  I've collected some of the beads:

http://i166.photobucket.com/albums/u115/moonivy53/Camera3-7-07096.jpg

On the left are some miscellaneous spacers I'm thinking of using.

In the next column to the right are 3 fire opals (for fire) and a piece of blue lace agate (for water).

In the next column to the right are a laborodite pendulum (for creativity/crafts/making), an amazonite bead (for healing) and an amethyst bead (for learning/wisdom).

In the far right column is a lava bead (for land), a green opal (for sea), and a chalcedony bead (for sky).

I haven't figured out the spacers or how it all goes together yet.

I love those opals! And the copper knots - I've used them before. I find that the copper findings are harder to <laugh!> find sometimes.  I also need to track down some lava beads for my own use -- I did a commission piece with some that were supplied, and their texture was amazing. They are so light, too!

Please post a pic of this project when you're done - I'd love to see it!

I'm not sure this is the right section...

Do you have a set group of prayers you use with the beads, or are they more of a prayer focus-item? (Does that even make sense?)

I'm not sure if this should go here as part of the thread or as a new topic.

For those that use payer beads, did you use them as a member of a different religion than you now follow?  The only religion that I am familiar with that uses payer beads is the Catholic faith.

Along with that question, if you have not used prayer beads befor, how did you determin what to include with you use?

Nope.  I was raised Methodist -- no prayer beads there -- and I've never been Catholic or any other religion that uses prayer beads.  I'm sort of making this up as I go because it feels like the right thing to do.  My intent is to use them as a focus for meditation (which I'm horrible at) and prayer.  I'm using beads that represent a concept to me, either because of what they're made from, how they're shaped, or what color they are, or a combo of those things.

I don't really know if it'll work, but it seems like it's worth a try.
